2008 Photo Contest

Southern, NH(Zone 5b)

Is there going to be a Photo Contest this year?

I've looked, but I didn't see anything about it

(Zone 1)

I think the 2007 contest was the end of the year, beginning of this year. So, maybe it will come up in December. I hope so as I'd like to enter a couple of pictures.

I just found the old thread: http://davesgarden.com/contest/2007/ Looks like it was sometime in October as the deadline when the entries closed was Nov 1st. Hopefully we will be hearing about a 2008 contest in the coming weeks!

Marlton, NJ

Here is the post from last years contest. It was anounced on Oct.2

Thanks for bringing this subject up, Ownedbycats.
I was wondering the same thing...
Also if Dave is considering doing the Calendar again this year.
What's the plan, Dave?

(Zone 1)

I have a feeling Dave has been so busy he hasn't even had a chance to think about the contest this year.

Lin, I'm sure he is a busy man!
Who knows... He might even be busy working on a new concept to the contest!

Terry brought up the photo contest/calendar issue with me a couple days ago and I've mulled it over.

In the past we have had a variety of categories and that has worked well. Last year we decided to make a calendar (which was beautiful and I love looking at mine every day) and I think that went well, but it was difficult matching each winner to a month.

So, Terry proposed that we make the contest categories be actual months, plus the cover. So there would be a total of 13 categories. If you have a winter photo, you would submit it into one of the winter categories.

Then when it comes time to vote, you would vote in each month based on which photo is the best and most appropriate picture for that particular month.

What do ya'll think about that approach?

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

That sounds like an excellent idea, Dave.

Sounds easier to me. I have trouble finding time to go through all those categories! And it sounds a lot easier on admin.

Hi Dave,So there will still be a category for wildlife?

pelletory, no. There would be no specific categories like that.

Your wildlife photos would go into whichever month (or the cover) that you thought was most appropriate.

(Zone 1)

I Love that idea!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

The idea sounds good, and easy for purposes of a calendar, but are we going to get a lot of scenery photos instead of a variety of subjects? There's not many members from the southern hemisphere, but a few might feel left out with this idea, apart from the fact that the US has much more brilliant fall scenery, winter scenes etc than many other countries (this one included!).

I guess a brilliant fall pic would win one of the categories anyway, but fall can cover 3 months, another 3 months of wonderful winter scenery, spring pics I can't imagine other than spring bulb flowers so there's 3 of those. Summer is easiest maybe of the lot, but again it will likely include flower beds full of flowers.

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

Winter??? Whahhhh, we don't get any winter here! ;-)

Our friends in the southern hemisphere should know that the majority will vote for northern hemisphere photos, so if they have a winter photo they should post it in Dec, Jan and Feb.

I foresee photos going into whichever category you want. If you have a beautiful picture of a landscape that's in full bloom, just pick one of the summer months, for example.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

I think it limits us a bit much. I love my calender but still think it sets too many limitations. I see a lot of photos here that deserve to be entered but would never fit in any particular month. One instance is birds that fly south for the winter, they are summer birds for me and winter birds for Florida, what month would they fit into!! ~Personally I love the categories~

Northern California, United States(Zone 9a)

I would have a hard time deciding what month to add mine to. We'll see.

I'm glad to see these differing viewpoints. I posted this in order to stimulate discussion so we could make a consensus and go with it.

I have no problem whatsoever going either way. The category approach has worked for us for all these years - maybe we shouldn't change it?

(Zone 1)

With so many discussion forums, I can envision a photo contest for Container Gardening, Bird Watching, Pets, Landscapes, House Plants, Fruits & Veggies, Wildlife ... each forum could have their own little contest, LOL. Can you imagine?

I know you can't please all the people all the time but whatever is decided is fine with me. I can't think of any way to improve it over last year, some really wonderful photo's were submitted and it was really hard to vote for one over another in most cases! I sure enjoyed all the great photo's last year and look forward to seeing the entrants again this year!

You know the old saying ... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

edited to correct my misspelling!

I would have to say I like it the old way, sorry.

Cochise, AZ(Zone 8b)

I like the old way too. Think it will be much harder to compare apples to oranges with all categories in 12 months. Maybe after contest do a second level. Post the 12 winners and let us go in an label each by month. More fun for US! Less for Dave and admin!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I like to old way to. And I like that idea Grammy, more fun

That's a great idea.

Okay, unless anyone says otherwise, we'll do the contest this year with the same exact categories as last year, and we'll see about following up with a secondary vote so we can all collaborate on deciding which photos go on which month.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Dave, I was wondering if we could maybe dedicate this one to a very wonderful DG'er who loved sharing his photography. Trois passed away last month and was very active on the photos forum. Just a thought and it's ok if you can't do something like that. He deserves to be remembered in some way.

Marlton, NJ

Thats a wonderful idea weegy!

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Let's hope we can do it.

Good call.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Good job, Grammy.

I like it Dave, lots more fun LOL
In dedication to Trois ( Don't know him, but still a Honor)

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I'm just now catching up on all the good ideas for the contest. I also like the idea of the first round with all the regular categories, then a second round for the calendar pick :)

That would be very fun and interactive to let the members vote for what goes in the calendar too.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

So it might be possible?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I think its a givin Weegy

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I think Trois deserves a tribute.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sounds like a well placed dedication to me!!

A tribute to Trois sounds Fantastic!
I also like how the contest ran last year.
Terry's proposal was an excellent idea though.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

Definitely vote for a tribute to Trois.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

I vote for a tribute to Trois too. I only got to meet him once, which I really regret. But he touched the lives of so many on DG, near and far, with his beautiful photos. A photo calendar is a wonderful way to remember him.

Edited to add... maybe one of Trois' photos could be selected as the cover photo?

That would be a fabulous ideapbtxlady..with a dedication/tribute or quote maybe.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I think that would be a great Idea, does anyone know who could post them, in his honor.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

How about his daughter, SingingWolf?

We've already agreed to a tribute to Trois.
