I am just trying my hand at growing heather. I planted ten different plants this summer and so far so good. Still, I am just wondering if anyone has any advice/bewares about heathers? I would also love recommendations on nice hardy varieties. I am zone 5-6 Thanks!
Anyone ever tried growing heather?
I grew Hawaiian heather in Louisiana, Texas and Hawaii. Quite different than the heather you are probably growing. I was surprised that even if it froze, the seeds were viable and the area filled in nicely. In Hawaii, I ended up trimming them as a low hedge. Beautiful tho they are, they can take over...
I am growing scotch heather, which is basically what you'd find on the Scottish/English moors-so I read. Since our winters upstate here can be long and drab it is nice that these varieties flower through fall and snowy winters. I hope I have that luck! Thanks for the feedback:)
I haven't grown any, but I can tell you that like other things in that family they need acidic soil in order to be happy.
