Cranberry harvesting pictures

Clinton, CT(Zone 6b)

It is profitable to harvest cranberries with choppers. Wow. The economics of that stuns me. Good for the farmers and considering what it would cost me to grow, harvest and preserve cranberries, $1.59 a can is a steal.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

David, it sure is a steal. I don't know how profitable it really is. I've never asked my neighbors how much of a profit they make on their cranberry harvest. Seems to me that farmers, no matter what they grow, never really make that much.

I've often had the same thought about honey. When you consider the amount of pollen those poor little guys have to collect to make a kilogram of honey it's amazing. I have never understood why honey is so cheap.

You know, Margaret, I never thought about it, but that is pretty amazing that honey is so cheap.

Karen, there's an Ocean Spray advert showing on TV at present showing the cranberry harvest. Every time I see it, I think of this fascinating thread.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I haven't seen those ads. I've seen the silly Ocean Spray ads with the 2 men, one older and serious, the other maybe in his early 30's and rather dorky. Here's one example:

There are many others.

I got a few shots of cranberry harvesting this year. Here are some.

Thank you for resurrecting this thread! I so love seeing these photos! Maybe some great cranberry recipes are in order, either here or on the recipes forum.

I would love to see that just for the copter factor

Hi Karen!

East Bridgewater, MA

Cranberries are under-rated, in my opinion. Very healthy, just be a bit careful with the sweetener.

Europeans are now becoming big fans of the cranberry, it is indeed a "health food."

Hi, Carrie! Thanks for the link to your article. I remember reading that either last year or the year before. I love anything made with cranberries in it. My Dad drinks a lot of OS juices.

You're welcome, mamsita, and go ahead and post some recipes if you want. Post in the recipes thread and include a link from this thread. You can do it vice versa, too, if you want. Sounds good. I'd like to try some cranberry recipes.

Allison, it is fun to watch that helicopter. I get a thrill every time they do it.

Does OS grow cranberries in Australia, too? Thanks for sharing that. Not a funny one like the ads here.

No, Karen, they aren't grown in Australia, or if they are, certainly not in commercial quantities. Apparently the north eastern US has ideal growing conditions.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, okay. I hear they grow a lot in Wisconsin, too. They like acidic soil.
