Wow Karen, that was fantastic. Thanks for taking the time to do it. You've provided me with quite an education. What a beautiful area you live in. All the shots are really good but the first one is a stunner.
Flowerjen, thanks also for the links. Fascinating stuff. The Chatswood Festival look like it would be a lot of fun.
Cranberry harvesting pictures
Thanks, Margaret. I love sharing.
Flowerjen, those look very interesting. I have yet to attend a cranberry festival, and there are 2 here every year.
Karen
Karen, maybe you could consider doing your own article on the cranberry harvest. Your pictures and a description of the process would be welcomed by DG, I'm sure. Thanks again. Has the harvest finished now, or is there still more to be done? Happy mowing. Margaret
Hi, Margaret,
Actually, Carrielamont did an article on cranberries for DG. If your interested here is the link. She had actually posted it earlier in this thread.
http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/315/
I don't really have time to do any articles, though maybe one of these days I will do one. I have trouble just keeping up with posting on the threads.
I don't know if they are finished with their harvest. They have another section of bog that I don't know if they've harvested yet. Today we got rain all day. I don't know if they will do dry harvesting in the rain.
Karen
Thanks, Karen. Yes I did read the linked article earlier in the thread. I know just what you mean about being busy. I'm so far behind I think I'm in front. LOL
LOL! Absolutely! At least our lives aren't boring. I would be depressed if it was.
Karen
So right. I'll be glad when they bring in the 48 hour day so I can get more done.
Then when would we ever sleep?
Sleep will be made redundant.
Okay, I'm having trouble posting the other pics. Will try again later.
Karen
Wow, still dry-harvesting this late? I thought it was all over by now... dumb me. Better load up the freezer.
Carrie, my neighbors always harvest late. I think they were harvesting around the same time last year. They have not done their harvest all at once. They've been doing it I think off and on now for the last 2 or 3 weeks. The owner works, so I guess he has to restrict to his days off.
Karen
Here is the second pic.
It says on the list that it's Margaret's Bday TODAY, so I guess that's the 12th, but whether it's already over or about to start, I can't answer.... we're hopeless.
LOL! I guess we are hopeless, Carrie, though I could take the time and look up the date for her area on Google if I really wanted to. Too many other things to do, though, and they all take time. Tonight I made a really yummy homemade chicken soup with potatoes, carrots, onions and kale. First time using kale in anything, and I have to say I love it. The soup came out great!
Karen
Actually, once I got a comment from Australia on an article I had written the day before it was published here, so I guess they're ahead, so we're already late? Happy Belated Birthday!
Karen, what wonderful pictures of the harvest. It must be fantastic to see that colour for real, in 3D.
Thanks Karen and Carrie for the birthday wishes. We're ahead of the USA. I just Googled and we're 14 hours ahead of MA, but of course the time difference increases the farther west towards the International Date Line. I think we're 16 or 17 hours ahead of Alaska. We're currently 9.33am on Thursday. You're right, it is confusing and I can't get my head around it. I had a great birthday (on the 12th).
LOL! Well, now we know, Margaret! Glad you had a great birthday.
Karen
I really love seeing the photos of the cranberry bogs. I was born in western MA, but my first experience with the cranberries came all those years later when my kids were small and we were looking for a day trip off the Cape. Your photo essay has been wonderful, and I have enjoyed the whole thread. Thank you so much! - Lynn
You're most welcome, Lynn! I really enjoy sharing my pictures with anyone who is interested. Would like to go pro someday. Been thinking about it for years, actually, though I'm no good at doing the paperwork and business stuff. Never have been good at that. If I could find a partner to help with all that, then I'd be all set.
Karen
Margaret, I bet the difference is more from Alaska than that! We're three hours different from California on the East coast of the U. S. Either way, it's a l-o-n-g way different from you!
Years ago, I worked in photo labs and had the experience of the behind the scenes things that used to happen. In fact, while I was working in the second one, I was introduced to my now husband who was the photographer for the local ski club. He is the better photographer, but I enjoy it as well. I hope you consider going pro. My neighbor across the street is a professional photographer and we have some interesting discussions.
Off topic: Do you do anything with B&W photography? And do you do both film and digital? You can always Dmail me so we don't get too far away from the topic!
I just Googled the current time in Alaska and you're right, we're eighteen hours ahead.
Lynn, going off topic is fine with me. I have done b&w in the past, but never did much with it. Took a class in it and did some darkroom work, which was a lot of fun, but oh so time-consuming.
I now love the digital darkroom on the computer. I have Paint Shop Pro 8, though I still don't know how to do about 80% of what it's capable of doing, as I just don't have the time to practice, and it's hard doing some stuff without someone actually helping me out.
I have worked strictly with digital since about 2003, when I discovered how great digital photography is. Haven't gone back to film, as I don't like how I really can't do any manipulation of my exposures, contrast/lightness, etc. after they're developed, and I really can't afford all the expense of film and developing, etc. So much cheaper with digital. I rarely get prints made, as I take so many pictures it would cost me a fortune.
Anyhow, if you ever want to talk shop about this subject with me and other DG members, we could start a thread in the Photos forums. I've been following and posting in a few threads there, like the ones on backlighting, sunsets, reflections, etc.
Karen
Thanks for that, Karen. I will have to start lurking there and see what everyone is doing. I am still a novice with digital, but like the capabilities. Just as with sound recording, digital has a long way to go to approach the purity of the original. Not always better, just different.
- Lynn
Oh, Margaret, I hope your birthday was all you wished for and then some.
Thanks Jan. It was a great day and I've been overwhelmed by the good wishes all over the place on DG. What a wonderful community to have such generoisty of spirit with virtual strangers.
Happy birthday, Magaret. You share a b-day with my son who turned 6!! It's like a b-day week for him since his party will be on Saturday.
HBD to jen's son 6
This is a busy month - at least in our family. Grand total of 8
That's why I love Thanksgiving soooo much.
Thanks Jen and happy birthday to your son. Hope the party is great fun on Saturday (that's tomorrow for me). Six year olds are such fun. I've attached an old pic of a couple of Rainbow Lorikeets we had in an aviary. Let your son know these cheeky birds wish him happy birthday all the way from Australia
Eight in your family eh, Jan? Are they all Scorpios? Lucky you if they are! .
Cute lorikeets, Margaret.
Happy Birthday to your son, Jen.
Karen
Don't know, Margaret, if we are scorpios or not. I've never really paid attention to the zodiac. Sorry, I wasn't specific enough. After I read my post, I thought I should have been more clear. There are 8 birthdays in Nov. all of them within 10 days. My brother, his son and daughter and a grandson, then me, my son and his wife and a granddaughter. Oh, and my parents' anniversary.
Beautiful color on the lorikeets!!
I have liked seeing the cranberry harvesting. East of here about 60 miles there are bogs in the pine barrens of NJ. I've only seen them once during the summer.
Jan, I once read an article on the Pine Barrens in NJ in National Geographic. It was in an old issue, I think back in the 70's. Very interesting.
Karen
