Cranberry harvesting pictures

Truly, you've hit the nail on the head! DG is cross-everything.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

You're welcome, Margaret, and thanks for the compliments. Hey, if you ever want to visit the states you would be welcome at my place anytime. I live right across the street from a cranberry bog, and I could show you Eadaville Railroad.

I get what you mean about DG. Always something new to learn, and interesting and fun people here. I look forward to checking on things here every day.

Thank you Karen. What a lovely invite. I would love to visit the US but can't see it happening for a long time. Unfortunately.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Same here with me visiting Australia. I've always wanted to visit. Maybe someday.....

Speaking of Australia, there is a movie with that title coming out soon, and it looks good. Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman are in it. I like both of them, and Jackman is a real hottie.

I'll swap you Hugh Jackman for George Clooney.

Hey, they're both gorgeous!

Quoting:
Yes, there is a road to the bog, but they use the helicopters to load the full crates onto the trucks. How do they do it other places where they dry harvest? Do they take heavy equipment onto the bog to pick up the crates?

Ya know, Karen, I don't know that much about other cranberry farmers who dry harvest, but I'm pretty sure that Annie (of Annie's Crannies) sells all of hers "on site" at her bog-side store so there's no need for transportation.

Cranberries are a big part of the history of Cape Cod, where DH and I moved to a few years ago. We're fascinated by the various bogs that are still producing all over the area, both for wet and dry harvesting. Thanks for starting this interesting thread--you just never know what topics will appear on DG (I get George.)

Went to a Cranberry festival today, but it ended up being more of a street fair. Ocean Spray was there selling their sample size wares for $1 a piece all proceeds going to charity. They only other cranberry type thing was a vendor selling cranberry hot sauce(didn't try it, don't like hot sauce- hubby didn't try it, doesn't like cranberries) and a bakery selling cranberry nut bread. That was the extent of the cranberry connection. Time to rename the festival, I think.

flowerjen,
There are cranberry bogs at Whitesbog near Browns Mills. The Cranberry Fest brings lots of people to Bordentown and helps business. Come try one of the restaurants.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Eadaville Railroad has a cranberry fest every year, and so does another place in Carver. Should be soon.

Welcome, Nina, love your screen name. My mom's name is Nina. Were you out there this weekend?

Bordentown, NJ

Yes, I was. Great small town. Some very old homes and good restaurants as I said.

Any favorite restaurants you recommend?

PERTH, Australia

Karen, I was in a supermarket this afternoon and saw the bottles of Ocean Spray Cranberry juice. I looked at the details and saw that (for Australia) the juice is made from local and imported cranberries under licence by Ocean Spray. I assume the imported cranberries would be from your part of the world. What a shame there's no information on the bottles (which are glass, not plastic) on the fascinating process of harvesting and cranberry bogs. I just might contact them via their website and suggest they include a bit of info. Love this thread.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Yes, Margaret, that would be nice if they did include some info on their bottles. I have not had a chance to take anymore pics of cranberry harvesting of late, as I've been so busy. I have passed by many bogs that were just finished with their wet harvesting, and I noticed one bog on the way home from work was loading their cranberries via helicopter after dry harvesting. I so wanted to go and take some pictures, but I had things to do at home, so I couldn't stop. How disappointing!

cranberries also grow in eastern and central canada and also in british columbia they have been picking them now for about a month only in british columbia do they wet pick the rest is all dry picked by hand.
I was raised in new brun swick on the east coast and it was a fall event for the kids as soon as the bog had harden with the cold we would pick them and make jelly and and cranberrie sauce even try apple cranberrie pies and muffins yummy

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

scicciarella, I learned that the ones that are sold fresh are all hand picked; the ones that are machine picked are turned into juice or "sauce" which is really jelly. (Or I suppose added to muffin mixes too.)

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

You guys are making me hungry for cranberry muffins or something. My neighbors across the street are going to be harvesting this weekend or next weekend, and I told them I'd like to take some pics. They always give me a bag of cranberries, too. They dry harvest theirs. That was their bog where I took the helicopter pics.

Karen

Looking forward to the pics and the muffins, Karen. Have fun.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Here is the first in a series of my neighbors loading the cranberry crates onto the truck by helicopter. This first one is a nice one of the copter with reflections. I got these shots today.

Bee-you-tiful shots, nutsfordaylily!
We saw some lovely vistas of cranberry bogs being harvested yesterday, from the windows of the Cape Cod Railway "Brunch Train" on its last foray of the season (Hyannis to Sandwich, and back.) Both wet and dry picks. But no helicopter pickups, which is why I especially enjoyed your photos!

Thank you so much for this series of photos, Karen. This is something many of us have never seen, and I find it fascinating. I have more respect for the bags of cranberries I see in the market and the juice that is available. I think your photo #1 is stunning.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the compliments, mamasita and CapeCodGardener. I really enjoyed taking the pictures. I happened to be mowing my lawn today, which, as I'm sure you both know, takes an extra long time this time of year if you bag the clippings, as you have to stop quite frequently to empty the bag. As soon as I heard the helicopter arrive I grabbed my camera and went across the street. Wish I could have been over there earlier to actually get shots of them picking the cranberries, but I had too much to do today, and little time to do it. Oh, and I have a shiny, new lawnmower now, too, which I'm thrilled with, as the old one was getting too troublesome to start and the self-propel wasn't working most of the time anymore.

I appreciate the time you took to share your experience. As I said before, the first picture in this latest series is a real winner!

Thanks again!
