Making seed packets

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

You all may already know about this, so bear with me if I'm repeating this....

I found this neat web site where you can download a template for making your own seed packets. I'm just new enough to find this a wonderful treat. Sorry to all you "old timers" who have done this for awhile.

I'm just having so much fun...

I had a hunch, and sure enough - this website is MzMunchken's, the same MzM that "resides" here :)

I have a few I have made myself too, if you want I will share mine too.

I thought that name looked familiar. Now I know why. Thanks for pointing that out.

Hi,
I tried to save the seed packets & it wouldn't work.. Hmm wonder why.. I can other things.
Sugar_fl

Great idea- other than MzMunchkin's wonderful seed envelopes, anyone know of any other designs out there or care to share the ones you created yourself? Let's see how many different designs we can come up with! Here are some I found:

I just do not have time to make up all those packets! They look wonderful though. I just went to the stationary store and bought a couple of boxes of Coin envelopes. They are not pretty but they are sturdy and easy! I can writ all the info on them or print out labels to stick on them.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

I am just looking for the least expensive way to do things. Heck, I have been sending some things out in looney toons envelopes that I found at a yard sale. :)

Brooksville, ME(Zone 5a)

this website has a seed packet with the Dave's Garden logo right on it. Anyone know how to print the template? Where is it located on the website?

This is what you're looking for...

Brooksville, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes that is what I was looking for. Thanks. What a nice touch for trading with people on this website.

Saint Petersburg, FL(Zone 9b)

Thanks all for the links these will make seed trading a little more fun

Just a note here:
I just did up 60 seed envelopes and spent hardly a penny! How? I used a template of a cut out seed envelope as a pattern, and using old gardening magazines, traced and cut out gorgeous envelopes! So easy, too!

I make mine from WALLPAPER! I made a template, cut the envelopes from a roll of wall paper, which will make thousands, and with a glue stick, glued them together. They are pretty and very effective.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

You can get wallpaper books that are discontinued from paint and wallpaper stores. They save them for schools, girl scouts, etc. No cost at all there...

Woodsville, NH(Zone 4a)

I have some cute seed packets I would be happy to share but I'm having trouble with the hyperlink. My packets are in My Documents and I went into that and picked a packet and hit copy. Then when I went back to my entry I couldn't click paste because it wasn't highlighted.Duh, I know next to nothing about computers so if someone can tell me step by step what to do I will post them. Thanks.

Newnan, GA(Zone 8a)

snowhermit, go to the photo forum and upload the picture. You can't copy and paste a picture here:)

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Thanks to everyone who sent me seed packet templates. I'm set! They all look so great, too. You guys are pretty talented.

So glad all these old threads are kept around. I found
everything I need on this thread and more without having
to bother you "oldies" with a worn out subject!

There is something to be said for being called a "newbie"
when you look at the alternative! ha ha :) just kidding!
Arlene

PS Thanks again, Dave for the way you run the site; God Bless You

Twinlakeschef - if you clink on the "Extras" link in your menu box at the right of this page... there is now a whole page of seed pack designs to play with.

TwinLakesChef,
I make my own seed packets, too.
It is kind of fun. :-)

Wow! It just keeps getting better and better. Poppy, thanks for the tip.

Oscarsdotter, I plan to make seed packets over the winter but may not use them until next year. Due to our property being torn up this last year never had much to collect seeds from. Other than a few tulips and iris from before, I will be starting from scratch this Spring.

But I will make them up and be ready next summer to
collect, dry and mark correctly and then I can do some trading.
Gives me something to look forward to.

Shirley,

Thanks for posting those web sites. They're great.

Oh folk, I love you all - and your ideas are neat and lovely. But...

As the starter of several Round Robins, I have to say... amateur seed packets LEAK! Many an hour I've spent, taping them up - and trying to separate the spilled flower seeds from the alliums. And working out which is which...

The worst kind is those little self-sealing origami packages. Cute, but... after travelling a few thousand miles, and being thumped by the Post Office - they leak. Horribly.

So please do affix them securely. Or better - buy some cheap little envelopes. And stick on your own customised labels. That way, they still remain your 'brand' - and your recipient will then KNOW if they're planting poppies or onions.

Love

JOHN YEOMAN

Carla,

Since you started this excellent thread on seed packets, would you please send the hyperlink to Dave. It would be an excellent topic in the Frequent Q & A Forum (not sure of the exact new name).

Thanks,

Shirley

Oh, I hear you, John! I'm afraid I've sent out my share of unsecured personalized seed packets. I still make my own seed packet covers, but my seeds are in little waxed paper envelopes inside those now. It's very disconcerting to pick up a pack of seeds and see them falling out the bottom!

I have two sizes of blank packet forms I use. The corners are webbed so that they fold in on themselves to avoid spillage from the corners. I insert pictures of the plants from which the seeds were collected, and I offer information on the back. Here is the one I made for my wild geranium seed.

That is just lovely, Weez!
They are all great but yours is the best!

Wow!

I retire in five directions, in stunned admiration.

Oh, if only those templates were available in live colour on Dave's Garden for every popular cultivar... not least, legumes and tomatoes.

(Well, we all have our wish lists!)

Thank you for the compliments! I used Microsoft Publisher to create my seed packet designs. First of all, I traced out the packet pattern in light blue (looks better if you're cut outs are off the mark a bit). I then scanned the traced pattern and saved it as a jpg.

Next I created a Publisher template document that holds two packet templates per page. When I'm ready to make seed packets, I open the templet document, SAVE AS "Seed Packets 2002" or whatever. Once in the new document, I create more pages with the templet design, then begin filling the templates, creating boxes of text and inserting the desired photo.

I'm sure there are other programs out there that will work equally well, but I like the fact that I can layer inserts, one under the other, and I can move boxed text around the template. I'd be happy to send my template design to anyone, but I'm afraid you'd have to have Publisher to open it.

I used to print out my seed packets from a template, but just got through putting together a round robin and found I didn't have time to do all that cutting and taping. Ended up just taking a plain old piece of computer paper, cutting it in quarters, folding as directed and then printing out decorated shipping address labels which I cut up and used to seal the envelopes. Was really fast and easy and seemed to hold the seeds with less leaking because the folds overlapped better.

My seed packets are
pretty much like Weezin's.
My method (of set up) is much
like Weezin's, except I do mine on an old
PrintMaster program.
I often sit and cut & paste my seed packets
(literally!) while watching
TV in the evenings. :-)

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

Oscardotter: That's exactly what I do! The actors on my favorite TV shows could be performing in the nude and I wouldn't even know it... got my head down over those packets, folding, pasting! LOL

Kat7: You're right about too much work for production, but I think you've just got to love to do it or it isn't worth it! Your idea with the labels is great, and if I were packaging up hundreds of seed packets, I'd not be able to do it my way!

I will, however, venture to say that it is worthwhile putting small seeds into some sort of inner packet that is easy to pour out but doesn't leak. I make mine using waxed paper and I fold them double on the sides, leaving a flap at the top. That way, you can see through the waxed paper to know when you've gotten all those little fellows out of there, and it keeps them from escaping out the corners of the outer packet.

Westbrook, ME(Zone 5a)

I'm too dang lazy. I've tried out quite a few different templates and all... but I prefer the ease of the ugly brown coin envelopes. I used to spruce them up with rubber stamps but I don't even do that anymore.

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)

PoppySue: Those coin envelopes are just about the easiest to deal with. They seal well and they open well so the little seeds don't lodge in the corners. These seed packets I make are really vanity. It gives me a chance to show off some pictures of my plants! If I would sending out lots of seeds, I could never find the time. You're not lazy, you just manage your time wisely! I always got a "U" on my report card for that!

Excellent links! These seed packets will make trading much more personal. I'm having a ball wandering all around the DG site the last couple days. I knew I should've signed up for the yearly rate rather than the trial period. This is truely a wonderful site with so much to offer. NCS

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

There is so much information on this site...the seed packets are a wonderful help to many of us, I know. Enjoy!

I have been looking for days for a website that has the forms that you print and cut and paste to make a seed packet. I have had no success so far, if you have any of these websites, please let me know how to find them. Thank you

Seward, AK(Zone 3b)
