when do we plant onion sets

Palestine, TX(Zone 8b)

We have been told by locals that we can plant onion sets in Nov. We have planted in the spring two years running and never had a good crop. My husband dug up the little onions that didn't grow this year. They look perfectly fine. I think we planted too late this last spring. Can he plant those little onions now? Will cold winters kill them?

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

In 8b you are not going to get any cold winter. However sets ( the little dry onion bulblets) are long day onions. You need a short day onion like a Texas 1015 or a Granex type. Get plants and get them in the ground in October - November. They begin bulbing in March on 12 hours of daylight. The long day onions bulb in June when it is just too hot here and I suspect also in Texas.

I tend to believe the locals. Here's an article too. Used to live in Palestine. Les

Thanks for the input guys. I will pass it along to my husband. I never thought of planting anything when the weather was cold.

Les, we moved to Palestine in 2005 after Hurricane Charlie literally blew us out of Charlotte County, Fl. We love it here. I was born and bred in Amarillo but the weather is too extreme there to go back. Where is Brazoria?

Brazoria, TX

Brazoria is South of Houston about 20 minutes from the coast. 45 miles West of where Ike hit at Galveston. Thankfully, we had no damage, just clean-up of branches.

Sorry, should have said we lived in Athens, Tx. But relatives were early settlers of Palestine and area. Here's a short story of one relative of Palestine. Great uncle C.C. Rogers.

That is quite the history. Times certainly have changed. Now adays with his colorful background Christopher wouldn't have been elected for anything. Tough times called for tough men. Thanks for the lesson. I'm glad you came out of Ike with just "tree trash" as I call it.
