mint mulch and hazlenut shell use

Mill City, OR

I want to use mint mulch and hazlenuts shells around my plant but don't know how safe they are to use. I have a large number of rhododendrons, iris, daylillies and dahlias and many misc. plants and don't want to kill anything. Please help.

Sorry I don't know. Call a local nursery and ask them.

I got some hazelnut shells last year. They aren't great in the garden. They aren't crushed real finely, so they roll out onto the driveway and look messy. On the upside, the cats won't go in the mulched area. Now I use them to "mulch" pots of planted bulbs etc, so the cats won't use them as a litterbox! Much better for me is cocoa hulls. They stay in place perfectly, as they exude a sticky gummy substance the first time they get wet. The cats also avoid them. They also smell great!

If you have dogs I would avoid the cocoa mulch, it is toxic to them so unless you're sure the dogs won't get into it at all you're better off using something else.

I've also never heard of mint mulch so I'm curious what it is?

Does mint Mulch smell good? Is it actually mint plants that have been mulched?

I have just been reading another thread about using vicks vaporub to keep animals out of your plantings. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/983624/ They were talking about mint, but I have never heard of mint mulch. Do tell....

Mint is harvested and what is left they run through a mulcher to make smaller pieces like they make barkdust and sawdust. The stuff I recieved has been composted for a couple of years so it does not have the mint smell anymore. They actually call this mint compost that I bought. But I would prefer the mint muluch from the field that will compost down in my florwerbed and it does smell like mint.
So far it is working great and my plants seem to love the extra moisture that is holds.
