I had a neighbor telling me to be careful when I walk by this as it is a hornets nest...I just want to confrim. I have no idea what hornets look like!

Your neighbor's right on target. Caution is advisable. The "paper wasp" as it is sometimes called bacause of the paper like quality of the nest is actually a bald faced hornet. The link below is to a Ohio State University Extension fact sheet that covers both wasps and hornets. That should give you all the information you need.
