Finally I got flowers but what is the next step(dahlias)????

San Jose, Costa Rica

Hi everyone!!
I am soooo happy with my dahlias now, they are getting better after a masive attack of bugs !!
But now that they are blooming what is the next step??
Should I leave them there and once the flower is dyinig pinch the plant again or should I cut it once is full open??

I have no intention of cutting them unless is necessary as I think that they look gorgeous where they are.
need some help !!!!!!

You should never cut a flower off just because it is fulley open.

Only dead head flowers if you don't want to save the seed. Dahlias are sooo easy to grow from seed and will flower in their first season - even here LOL. By pinching out the dead flower and also taking off the stem it came from you will get bushier plants.

Thanx a lot!! every single site where I looked for information just talk about cutting the flower to put it inside the house but I really didn't want to do that.

I know lilcaro. Dahlias are so much nicer when they produce flowers for the garden I think. Cut flowers just die LOL

It really depends on the type of Dahlias you are growing, If it is the larger flowering types, then to keep them flowering, you need to dead head the flowers as they die off so the plant keeps producing more flower buds, but you only cut off the stem the dead flowers were growing on, nothing more than that, after you do this, you will soon notice new buds growing and if you dont remove the dead flowers, you will cause the plants to use energy making seeds at the expense of flowers, but as I said, this practice is for the larger flowering Dahlias that grow from tubers, if they are bedding dahlias, you need to also deadhead them or they will have a very short season. good luck. thanx Weenel,
My Dahlia has grown from a tuber, they aren't too tall as I was living in a place without good sunligth and space.
Now I am at my new home and they get all the morning sun (they are soooo happy!!) Rite now I have one with two flowers but I am noticing they they don't last too much, one has already bloomed but their petals are dying should I just leave one bloom grow or I can have two buds on the same plant??

Hi Lilcaro, you can have as many flowers on the same plant as the plant can produce with the Tuber type of Dahlia, but to help the plant continue to make more flowers, you are best to remove the dying flowers, get you pruners and run your finger down the stem of the dying flowers and just snip off that stem, there will be other flower buds forming, just make sure you dont cut these ones off, sometimes the dahlias make 2 or 3 flower buds from the same larger stem, so every-time you find a faded flower just remove that one and dont cut the others off, they will soon grow into the same size as the flower you removed, with Dahlias from Tubers, they like a lot of organic matter put into the soil or top dress the soil as this helps feed and keeps the soil from drying out so fast, good luck, so glad you got your Dahlia home and it is doing well. Beautiful, no wonder you are happy, most of my Dahlias got the buds eaten by earwigs this year, they flowered well, but the nice petals had all the edges nibbled to bits, this happened even before the buds had opened out, so next year I will be well ready to catch those bugs. good luck. WeeNel.

I knowww I hate every single bug that try to damage my babies, Next year will be better: more experience will bring better flowers and less bugs (well the bugs will always be there ughrrrrrr)

Too right about the bugs always being there, but remember some bugs are friends of the gardener too, it's just the pesty ones that do the damage we all hate, ha, ha, ha. WeeNel.
