Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol.14
pelletory, Thanks!
nanny_56, Enjoyed the photos! I think in that last one he was watching the bee... I see them fighting with/ chasing the bees alot, I wish I could just once catch the action of it all but haven't been able to do so yet, Maybe one of these days!
I read in one of those posted links that if you put all your feeders in one area that you might get a lot of HB's at once as they migrate through so I think I'm going to try it. Normally a HB will guard the feeder, But, When theres a lot coming through it's said that he can't keep up with them so there's always some at the feeders, Can't lose out anything for trying so I'll see if they were right
nanny, I'm just curious, How far away are you from your feeders when you take a photo ..And, Do you have an outside sitting area?
The front window...it is maybe 5-6 ft. from the feeder if that. This feeder is on the front porch and I could/do go out there for pics. But if they are in action, if I were to go out the door they would stop what they are doing and be gone. So I observe them through the window most often.
Would you try something for me? Sit on your porch, Try to be still and see if they come to feed, It might take a little time ( If there is only one thats coming around, It could take a half hour as they normally will come to feed every 15-20 minutes and seeing you'll be there it could take them an few extra minutes depending on how skitzy they are) If you see that they do come in with you sitting there, Then after there done feeding, Get your camera, Sit there again, Focus your camera before they come back, And when they do, Let them get a sip or two first and then moving slowly, Try to get your shot. LMK how you make out if you decide to try this ok? I think you'll be happy if this works out for you, And it should work.
oo oo, me too. I'll try it.
BUT, it is so cold today, I haven't seen a single bird. Maybe for the evening feeding! Today is usually the last day for them at my house.
Last summer someone posted a picture of about 6 or more feeders strung along on a clothesline. And there were lots of visitors!
I notice some hummingbirds will go to the feeder even when I'm standing 1 ft away and don't get startled off when I look at them. While others I can be down on the bottom level (feeder is on the top level) of the deck and 10 ft away and if they see me they change their mind about needing to go to the feeder. They are all so different, it's very funny. It does seem to me that the females in general are less scared of me. Maybe they are just more desperate because that's the only time the male isn't trying to chase them off, it sure seems that way sometimes.
I have a problem with the sit still and be quiet part..LOL!
LOL Nanny!
nanny, LOL! And..Nice shot!
Meredith79, Yes, It seems some are more skittzy then others. Seems like most of the females and juvenal males don't mind too much being at close range, But, The Adult males are a lot more timid.
one wish, what's that plant?
