grasshoppers, should i kill them?

Beverly Hills, CA

I see some of them are eatting the immature rose buds, I don't know how many there are, this particular rose is about 1.5 meter tall, i found one on top of the rose bud several times, I tried to catch it and put it far away from that rose, but somehow, they or this particular grasshopper always come back for more?

SCISSORS ! Chop them in half. You definitely don't want grasshoppers.

Got a pond? Goldfish'll eat 'em!

Woodway, TX(Zone 8a)

Surely you jest.

Beverly Hills, CA

oh, really, they don't eat insects at all? i thought that they look kinda cute.

Look on any goldfish care site--they eat insects.

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

I always thought Grasshoppers were from the same family as Locus, and these devour fields of crops, so I assumed that Grasshoppers had the same diet as their cousins, maybe youngmans Rose buds had aphids on them or maybe these hoppers were eating the tender buds, the plot thickens eh ?????, WeeNel.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes, grasshoppers do eat plants, that's why you don't want them around. I've had them munching on my hibiscus collection this summer, annoying little things! LOL

Deland, FL & Hot Spr, AR

You should see the ones they have in FL! They call them "lubbers" and they certainly aren't picky about their diet. They eat everything. Their bodies are close to 3" long, they are fast (I try to step on them whenever I see one -- it's called the lubber dance lol). They are brightly colored and that is about the only good thing I can say about them. Get rid of them before they eat up your garden!

Beverly Hills, CA

interesting, i always thought that grasshoppers are good, because everything is going green these days, i just assumed the green grasshoppers must be good, too. haha

they don't have the typical black or scary looking body, so i have never killed any at all. i caught two on that particular rose, and i just released them far away from the rose.

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

LOL, Youngman, you're as bad as I am--I hate killing things. Sometimes, though, it's eat or be eaten; in this case, it's your garden being eaten. Good luck to you!
