Himalayan Birch - can I plant a mini grove?

When I ride past other houses in Portland, OR, I see some people have what appears to be Himalayan Birch as a yard tree, and they appear to have either a multi-branched tree, or they've planted 3 close together.

Can anyone tell me which it is, and give any advice about that?

The "clump birch" effect is achieved by planting multiple young trees close together.
