I have a large lovely Datura plant gowing in my small raised perennial flower bed.I do not even know how it got there but would love to know how to either move it (quite large with thick stem) or propogate it so I can once again enjoy it next season in another spot in my garden.
Would appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
My Huge Datura
Yes, it does have plenty of seed pods....can they be planted in another spot ? Or perhaps I should just dig the whole thing up and move it pods and all !
Yours is just lovely !
I'd try moving it, why not? These grow wild here in the desert with almost no water...their pretty tough!
I took cuttings from the common purple datura - can't remember its proper name. I found them easy to root from cuttings. It might be worth giving it a go stormcloud.
I have rooted them from cuttings - but much faster to dig the plant and pot it up. It might be hardy for you?
Well, now I'm going to have to try rooting a piece. Everyone I know say's they have had no success.
Try bottom heat and misting - I rooted about a dozen last year for the school garden.
Maybe wait till the plant is in active growth fish_knees - that's when I did it. I don't know what your zone is but we have a pretty short summer so I took my cuttings in late spring, just as things really started to take off. I don't think I would have had much success if I had taken them at the end of the season.
Mine of course were given the benefit of a greenhouse.
I'm in zone 9, extremely hot and dry :(
Sorry:-( that just might be it. Can you do rose cuttings there?
I'm going to attempt Rose cuttings, a lot of people have success with that. So I should be able too ☺
If you can master that you can do these.
Wow! you don't have a problem with active growth then fishknees LOL
Thank you all....up it comes ~~~~ :-)
Cut it back first stormcloud or it will probably lose most of its leaves. Better to wait until you have a few ripe seed pods first just in case. Good luck :-))
Good suggestion, roseimp....I will wait a bit until the seed pods are ready.Thank you.
Think you can just plant the whole pod ?
If the seed pod is ripe and split open on the plant then yes.
Thank you all for your help ! :-)
