My 1st Brug buds

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

Do you think mine might get more buds in the house this winter?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I had one that just kept flushing all winter in the basement last year, and she was even a war zone with aphids... not as many blooms as the spring/summer growing season, and not as bright colored, and just a few leaves, but it still amazed me especially with the critters on her.

Great, mine are looking good still. They have been in about a month. I'll keep an eye on them.

I wish I had an excuse for mine, but we are still having hot weather, no cold spell in sight. I got pod and bud mixed up, it was buds falling off. I guess this is a lesson for me on brugmansias.

I'm still in brugmansia school, too, Samigal... great thing about education.. you're never too old or young. I think you could consider a bud a bloom pod; a pod that holds the bloom... but bud to bloom to seed pod.. if it gets pollinated by nature or by you. How long have you been "brugging"?

My first year AuntB on the brugs. Only have two now but hopping for cuttings soon from Cannagirl. I failed with cuttings from ZZ, but am more informed this time.

I lost almost all of mine the 1st round also. I have one now I got from a friend and one that I raised from seed. The one from seed is doing great also.

I started some more from seed this week and they are B. Sanguinea, red, I hope I get part of them to germinate.

We all lose some in the beginning and after almost 10 years I still lose a few, but I'm hooked, so I just keep getting more.

well, i have lost alot the past three years, I keep ordering pretties and plant them and they git all going and I find out i HAFTA DIG THEM OUT.. SHEESH!

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Deb, I have mine in big plastic tubs with corded handles.. $7 at Lowes or HD... I can't dig much cause of bad knees and my ground is clay and rock... lot's easier bringing in and out with the season... and less stress on the plant (I get help to lug them)

I think that is what I am going to do with my tropical water lilies next year or build their own pond and not put them in the big pond with the hardy water lilies.

That sounds good for the 2 Brugs I have also. Hopefully by next year I will have a few more if my seeds germinate.

I lost two more buds from my brug, I did find a tiny green worm inside the bud when I took it apart. Must have been so tiny when it bore a hold in the bud as you could hardly find it. I'm on the war path now. It is so hot here, 99, that I don't know how anything survives, except the damaging bugs.

poor sami.... i think you can spray your brugs tho ask aunt b...

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

We get over 100 degree temps with 60-70% humidity in summer and I rarely have buds dropping...when I suspect a culprit, I rotate sprays, so they don't get used to 1 kind... Samigal, I'd bring out the big guns, NEEM oil or Safer's Insecticidal soap. Lowe's, HD is where I got a some this spring.. mix with water and spray every inch of green, I even let some get on the buds.. and on the underside of leaves, stem and the top of the soil around it... then again, in 4 or 5 days, (or directions on Neem bottle) then the next time I'd use some peroxide/ 1part to 3 parts water with a few drops of regular (NOT antibacteril) dishsoap and the next time some Safer Insecticidal soap spray... Here in KS, I "work" too hard for summer (or end of summer) blooms to have them devoured... Samigal, I too received tiny little rooted starts from ZZ, I put them in a six pack (like annuals come in)... with MG potting soil, once I noticed they had adjusted and had new growth emerging I started feeding with 1/4 strength 20-20-20, potted them up to 4-6 inch pots and by then they were at about 1/2 strength food and it wasn't long till they were in 1 gal pots "eating at the adult table".... one was vixen and she's blooming right now.. here they were in June

Thanks AuntB, I have the Safer's Industrial soap, but have to get more aggresive with it. Will follow your instructions and hope I do get some good results. I'm looking forward to hopefully rooting some cuttings when I get them. I really didn't know too much about them the first time around.

As with any plants, Brugs are a learning experience.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Went out to check on brug, another bud on the ground. Ok, out came the soap spray and I gave it a good spraying from top to bottom and bottom to top. I guess I'm learning a good lesson here, or not. I see another tiny bud starting, maybe this will be the one. I have a NOID from Kim of Pa. that got a good spraying too. Not going to take a chance on that one getting chewed up. Brugs get my attention before any other plants now.
