My 1st Brug buds

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

I got a cutting from someone this spring or last fall and it has buds! I moved it indoors when the weather started cooling off and I noticed 8-10 buds on Sunday. Do you think they will bloom for me? They are not very big buds yet, probably 1-1 1/2" is all. I'm very excited about these buds. The plants have been in the house about 2 weeks now.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Dylan, I haven't moved mine inside, yet.. keep watch for spider mite... If they didn't dropped the buds by now, I think they will bloom (sometimes the abrupt change in environment cause them to drop)...It will probably take another 3-4 weeks to bloom, I'm just guessing. If you are coming to the RU- I'll bring some rooted ones for you, (and some ee's, too) the rooted "baby" brugs are getting too big to ship economically and I really don't want to use the winter space I have for them.. Congrats! It's always exciting to see buds, cause blooms will follow... just have to be patient, which is hard to do.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

I started moving stuff in on Labor Day weekend because I didn't want the temperature shock I had last year. My Tropical Hibiscus still had temperature shock and is gonna lose most of their leaves. I only have a couple of containers outside to move in now. I'm running out of space though so I better not take anything else now.

I purchased a bunch of Passiflora, Brug, Musa & Ensete seeds to start this winter also. I have no idea where I'm going to put them.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Lil seedlings don't take up much room.... I have a makeshift greenhouse in part of my basement - enlarged this year - hope it's big enough for everything... I'll bring a couple brugs to the ru, surely someone will want to try them. I've only started seeds of the brugs and a musa. I'd be interested to know how you do on the Passies and the Ensete, I found and Ensete plant, so it'll just be one more things that's coming in... Your temp change logic makes a lot of sense, maybe I should get the hibs in this weekend.... always something to ponder..

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

This is my first year to have Passifloras, I smelled one for the 1st time last year and fell in love. It was P. Incarnata, the fragrance was absolutely wonderful.

I bought Passi seeds last year and raised 75% of them. I bought 10 seeds of 10 different kinds and got about 8-10 of each to germinate. I killed quite a few from letting them dry out. I managed to save
P. foetida Love in a mist Passi sold all but 3 have 1 for next year left, the one I left outside is huge and is sprawling everywhere. I didn't know it would get that big and gave it a little trellis, the trellis is long since collapsed.
P. coriacia? Batwing Passi sold all but 3 have them for next year
P. incarnata I have 1 left if it survives the move inside. It looks like I will have plenty of volunteers though. I got some fruits this year also when they are ripe.

These are guesstimates on the names because I lost my tags so am waiting for them to bloom to know for sure.
P. alata I sold 2 and then I lost all my tags so I may have more of them
P. maliforma have lots of them but they don't grow like the rest Have 2 really good ones and the rest are only about 6" tall
P. edulis flavicarpa They are growing good, all of them

I am hoping I still have a Panama red and a Black Beauty but can't swear to that. I killed all of the Lady Margaret which is one I really want. I had one more but I can't remember its name, I don't think I saved any of those seedlings.

I am going to try to germinate the Ensete like a Musa and see what happens. I hear their germination rate is awful so I am keeping my fingers crossed. Which Ensete do you have?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Wow, you had great germination rate going on the passies.. I keep them all potted and let them sprawl on the lattice around my deck, snip them all back to a ft or 2 above the trellis in the pot and winter them in the basement. Have you ever rooted cuttings? I have Lady Margaret and could possibly spare a cutting or two as she was new this summer after my old one didn't winter over last year... she'll be growing in the diningroom this winter. This is the Ensete, I didn't know there were different kinds of Ensete... Are you going to make the RU? L.Margaret to the left of the canna...

I probably won't make the RU. I work Saturdays unless the boss has a horse show.

I have Snow Banana & Madagascar Banana. I got short ones 8-10' and the cold hardiest ones. Did you grow yours from seed? I could use germination tips.

Since this is the Brug forum, do you think we should move to the Tropical forum?

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

I bought seeds from Parks, Ensete, they looked like Basjoos, tho. I really didn't know what I was doing, but I got 3 of 5 to germinate and may have gotten them all if I'd waited longer. I believe it's normal germination to be sporadic... I just put them in a little pot (individually) and used seed starting mix. Covered with about 1/4 inch of the mix. I watered and put them in a mini greenhouse (inside my home) in January. They didn't do anything for weeks so moved them, (still undisturbed in their little pots) to the cool basement... (I think I put one in the frig) I left them in the cool temps for a couple weeks, then back to the warm humid "greenhouse"... they sprouted. Not sure if the cool temps had anything to do with it. Sorry you won't make the RU. Can we move the whole thread over to Tropicals? (I have too many plant addictions) Maybe you could post about the proper way of germinating banana seed over there... I don't get to as many forums as I'd like, but I lurk around a bit... too bad we have to work for a living.. lol

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

We just work to support our habits. See you on the Tropical forum.

Athens, PA(Zone 5b)

I am here lurking dy, cheering your Brug Buds on!!! Ohman, that first Brug bloom will feel soooo special. It's a lot like seeing a Hummer for the first time♥love at first site☺

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks posy, would be more exciting if it had been one of my seeds.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I have a brug from ZZsBabiez, my first, and I just noticed I have some buds forming. Was so excited about this as some tiny green worms have been eating the leaves. So hard to find them as they look just like a vein in a leaf. She also sent me some cuttings which didn't make it. I guess I'm going to have to learn how to get cuttings to grow for me.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Samigal!!!! Hi There!! Congrats on your buds! Ain't ZZ the greatest?! I'd spray with H202 and alternate with Neem spray or Safer's soap for the worms... they're just trying to survive... haha Cuttings are easier for me outside in the growing season, but not impossible in winter... you will find a way that works for you, just keep trying.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

I seem to lose at least 1/2 of the cuttings I try but am getting better at it I guess, I did cuttings from my 'Red Dragon' Persicaria and I only lost 1 out of 10.

I hope to do that well with brugs one of these days.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Thanks AuntB for info on the spray for the worms. I just added that to my "buy" list. I'm not throwing in the towel on cuttings either, will keep on trying. Got a yellow NOID from Kim of Pa. but don't look for any buds on that for a while. Just keeping it looking healthy is my goal now.

(Cathy), MO

Hi Peggy. I had my first bloom this year too. Have several others with pods now, but it's a race against the weather! Mine are still outside too.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

I started bringing mine in September 1st, I still have a Musa Darjeeling Giant and 2 Passifloras out there to bring in.

One of my buds has fallen off now but I still have hope for the other one.
What color was yours when it bloomed, I am not sure about the color of mine.

(Cathy), MO

Mine said C. Alba but I have never been able to find a picture of it. It bloomed white with a pink tinge. Pretty but not alot of scent. I can't wait until I get more blooms.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

Another bud fell off so I don't guess I am going to get buds right now. Maybe later. DARN!

Chesapeake Beach, MD

I read somewhere that you should move your plants slowly into your house (if possible) to minimize the shock. They said to put them close to your house for a few days, then bring inside.

It might help with the buds dropping.

(Cathy), MO

Well, I just found a neat little hole in my biggest pod this evening!!!!! Sorry #$%^&@!!! bugs!

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Better go out and check my brug. Pods are getting bigger and I don't want to find a hole in any of them. One tiny one fell off and I thought I was going to have a melt down.

(Cathy), MO

LOL. I had 4 pods earlier (2 months ago?) in the season and was so excited. The pot was on the picnic table where I'd moved it when I saw the pods. 3 mornings later I went out to "oooh and ahhh" and there wasn't a pod to be found! I looked all over and they were laying scattered out across the table. One was in a neighboring pot. And there was a very innocent looking feline laying up there in between the pots!!!! Apparently she got bored during the night and played bat the pod! It irritated me, but I kind of got tickled too. So they got moved and all kinds of little uncomfortable sharp cut up blinds put in the pots. Haven't bothered them since.
I'm just hoping we have enough warm weather left for these to make!

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

All of my buds have fallen off now so maybe next year I will get a bloom. I am happy if I can just keep leaves on stuff during the winter.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I moved my brug with the pods and lost a couple. There is one big pod and if I lose that one I'm going to sit down and cry. Firt brug, first pod big event in my life. LOL I bought some spray to help keep those nasty green worms away. Hope that is my solution to holy leaves.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

Yes this is my 1st attempt also. The others have all died before I got them this far, one I took thru the winter last year and one I got this year. I was pleased I got it thru the winter last year.

I checked on the plants the other day and my datura was naked. I couldn't figure out how that happened, Saturday I found the culprit. I guess I had brought in a baby tomato worm. I thought that was the kind of damage I saw but couldn't figure out how, now I know and it's dead. The worm not the Datura.

(Cathy), MO

My nemesis has been grasshoppers! I keep spraying and spraying and they keep chomping anyway! They were bad here this year

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Just checked my brug and big pod is still intact and a few tiny ones coming. My daily job will be to check on the progress. Unless we have a very cold spell like we did a a couple years I think my plants will be OK to sit out through our usually very mind winter. This has become an obession. LOL

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Sorry to hear of the bud losses... I'd cry too. samigal, you could even plant them in the ground in zone 10.. lots easier to care for as far as water and not blow over pots and broken limbs... Dylan, even IF your plant loses it's leaves inside, it will grow new quickly.. I strip most of them off before I bring in, less to spray for bugs and less hiding places for them... I've had big ones totally dormant, even cut to the dirt level, in total darkness, no water at all and in spring, there were new shoots coming up from the rootball... Once they have a good rootball, they are very durable.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

It would be much easier to store that way for sure. One of my friends planted his outside and I was amazed to see it so big and he didn't do anything to it. Everyone else I know around here takes them in. I guess one of these days if I have one I don't care if I lose, yeah right like that will happen, I will plant it and see what happens.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I have a Bud! yay! I swear it was just a stick when I put it into the ground! have no idea what to do now it is about two inches round ( the trunk) I have some leaves in the water tub, will those root? should Icut the top off and try to save it or should I uproot the whole thing?

Joeswife, what a beautiful bouquet of flowers. My pod is growing every day, and the little ones are still hanging on.

AuntB I know I can put my brug in the ground, but can't make up my mind where to put it. Hate making decisions. Maybe next spring I'll decide where she belongs. My soil is so bad, clay, so I do have to amend my soil first. Can't wait for my first pod to open up so I know what color I have.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I posted the wrong pic, sorry, and I still don't know whether to cut it or dig it.. sheese!

Haven't taken any pictures of my brug with pod yet. I have a problem with leaves turning yellow, then the worms started in on the leaves. Not going to panic, I know brugs are fast growing and with spraying them I think new leaves will be OK. We are due for some very warm weather yet, I'm looking forward to rain to help my gal along.

NE, KS(Zone 5b)

Hi, ya'll, Dylan, I would sure try planting on next year and wacking off in fall, put down some extra mulch and see what happens the following Spring. I'm just a zone below you but and it didn't work for me, but I think you will have good luck.. put down a protective layer of mulch, then pile on an unopened bag of mulch to protect from too much moisture (rotting root preventative)... may not even be necessary if someone close by is doing it... Joeswife, I'd leave that brug be for awhile, maybe the weather will cooperate and you will have time for the bud to blossom.. then protect the stump (or not, I think you are in zone 6), and root the top for more plants... sure hope we can meet person to person someday cause we could really swap idea, stories and plants! I'm saving some of my big babies for you, any preference on color?? named? noids, okay? Dylan, if you could get to Peppers home some time next week, I bet I could get her to hold one of these rooted cuttings for you... wanna try? certain color? I'll try my best..

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Went out for my daily inspection of my brug and found my large pod laying on the ground. Looks like the worms were chewing on it. I had sprayed it to. I felt the tears coming, but I do have 4 smaller pods now. Maybe they will grow up and open for me. I may have to camp out to keep my eyes on them.

Fair Grove, MO(Zone 6b)

Pepper is still 4 hrs away. I'll just have to drool on your pictures.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I have another bloom bud, hope the wind doesnt bust it off...holding off on bringing it in..

Good luck with those buds everyone ...trying to beat that cold ...it sounds heart breaking, never mind if worse comes to worse then you will get your plants up and flowering next Spring ...something to dream about over the long winter days. Once the cold comes the blooms are not at their best anyway (sorry to say).
