Fall sugar snap pea crop in Northeast?

Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Has anyone from the northeast had any luck getting a fall crop of sugar snap peas to germinate? I tried last year Labor Day weekend - nothing. This year, I put the seeds in 2 weeks earlier - nothing.

I had a decent spring crop, but I had to trying planting seeds twice because the germination wasn't very good.

Any tips on when (or how) to plant?

Peas will not germinate well if the soil is too warm. Here are a few things you can try.

Try pre-sprouting seeds by putting them between damp paper towels. When sprouted plant. Keep well watered, when seeds are up mulch to keep soil cool.

Cool your seed by putting them in the frige for a couple of days. Water soil heavily, then mulch to cool soil. Plant seeds deeper then you would in spring.

To find the best time to plant in your area, start small patches every two weeks
starting in August.

Dear g916,
Thank you ever so much. Those are great tips! I'll give a go now, even though I suspect it is on the late side. We do, however, have mild falls on account of the nearby ocean.

I have snap peas that I started around labor day, and the plants are about 3ft tall, with some flowers. I'm hoping to get some peas before it gets too cold, good luck!

Hmm, we put our seeds in Labor Day last year, but nothing germinated. Maybe our zone is just enough warmer that it was too early?

Sounds like yours are doing well! I hope you get a good crop!
