Hi Pardalinum Sorry you're tooo late!!!. I found Arena at SW last week and they're on order along with about 8 other varieties. Oh, this is an opiate. Many thanks for the link though and the welcome.
Ab-rosey, should be Albertalilies+++

compulsion or insanity?????
Geeni sage......... I thought I would plant them all at first but then I read about the pot method and I think that sounds better especially for the Orientals If I can find a place cool enough to store them. Does that sound like it would work??
I think that should work. Do you have a basement or cellar? I have a friend in your zone who keeps hers in pots in the garage in winter.
Gemini-sage Alas, no garage and my basement is too warm. I'll have to hunt around for some place suitable. What would be the ideal storing temperature? Should the temperature remain constant? Would you just store them in the pots that they grew in over the summer? I read somewhere that a woman stored the bulbs in a plastic garbage pail lined with peat for insulation and the bulbs in baggies in another pail in the center of all this. For every answer there are more questions, it seems.
Albertarosey
Hi chocolatemoose The orange and red lily that is pictured on the top of this page, could it be Matrix? I have a very similar lily that I rescued growing here.
Albertarosey
There is a new site for lilies on the web. These people will be selling martagons and Minnesota hybrids from the gardens of Hartle-Gilman in the fall but they have some nice selections for spring also! Bookmark this! You will want to keep checking out their stuff!
http://summerchasegardens.vstore.ca/
Cool!
Mainiac....I checked out Summerchase ...nice but they sruck me as expensive. Has anyone looked at www.Lilies From the Valley, com ????? You may have to wait a year to see their full potential but the price is right.
Albertrarosey, your link doesn't work. :)
Am speculating this is what she meant to post...Am I correct, ARosey?
http://liliesfromthevalley.com/
They only ship to Canada...Scroll Wayyy down to see her offerings...
I believe her flowers are from the cut flower market. That means that the foliage was reduced and the bulb won't perform well the first year or two. They should recover. They may not.
You get what you pay for.
That's what is stated in the verbage on the site. Think that's what ARosey meant when she said you'd have to wait to see potential...
BTW...Hi Mainiac!
Sorry about the link I just don't know how to do some of these things. Pls be patient with me:)
Yes that's the place.
Has anyone tried............... Lilies in the Valley They ship to the U.S.
LOL...We all had to and are still learning. Patience is plentiful here...
Okay...I found Lilies FROM the Valley that only ships to Canada but can't find a Lilies IN the Valley at all...???
cmoose get a load of this............. www.lilies.ca "By George I think I've Got It"
^_^ You DID it!!!
Anything interesting at 'lilies in the valley' for anyone??
Albertarosy(lily) (smile,) I recognize only a few names, but I'll bet all are gorgeous!! I'd call you lucky! I'd love to smell your yard!
'Moose, Matrix is vividly beautiful!
Mainiac, bookmarked! I love to look!
I'm back after a long time. I have to walk away from the computer sometimes to catch up around the house. I sowed peppers, eggplant and a few flowers so far.
We're getting a good rain and it was 63* at noon. It's only dropped to 57* now. It will be in the low 50* the rest of the week. My grass is greening up!!
Albertarosy, it's very pretty and a nice rescue.
LOL, LOL Billy, This was my yard last August. I had an asphalt "helicopter pad" taken out and in it's place have made gardens and put up a greenhouse and fenced it off from the 'view'. You couldn't smell anything but dust.
The lily in the picture is my one and only....many to come in the spring. I can't wait to see the after pictures and smell my lilies.
Thanks anyway for your comments it just made me laugh.
Albertarosey
The owners of Summerchase Gardens are good people. Very knowledgeable, and their source for martagons is impeccable. One of the owners is an iris hybridizer too, and should soon have some introductions out. They are also good speakers if anyone is looking for a program on Lilies or Iris. They are Minnesota based, and I highly recommend their company.
Excellent people to deal with.
Also have many lilies that you can't find and the bulbs are in very good condition.
Maxine
AlbertaRosey, I'm sitting here laughing now. I've changed my mind. It's insanity!!! Oh, I admire your order! I really look forward to pictures now! I'd be so glad to get rid if the asphalt. I never think my yard is big enough and your's is pretty small, but with it sounds like you'll have a wonderful back yard when it's all done. Are you in town? What view did you hide?
This is a lily I popped a couple babies off of. I'm calling it a ''rescue'' because the poor things were growing on top of the ground at the time and the owners were away for two weeks. I know, I'm shameful, but gosh, opportunity knocked :o)
I'm not sure of the name, but I can't wait till they bloom.
Billy, You might want to ask some of the more experienced lily gardeners here, but those lilies look like they are virused, but I'm not sure...
Ticker, I came across a picture of a similar lily a while back and didn't think to write the name down. I sure hope they aren't virused because I thought they were so pretty. I won't rule it out tho.
Anyone else have any opinions? Right now mine are really tiny. The bulbs were the size of a marble when I popped them off. I had noticed them the year before last and they looked like this. I took this picture last summer.
Oh, Billy you need glasses....The amandoned vehicles and that dirt ugly building across the lane...gave me instant depression when I walked out the back door. I couldn't resist taking a couple of pictures of the back today. It's getting better although the potential is hidden by all that white stuff. If you hear a steady hummm it's the heater in the gh working overtime. Yes you are right it is insanity!! I just couldn't resist all those lilies. Shen they start having babies I will go into business cause there won't be anywhere to put them.
Your STOLEN lily babies will be beautiful....sorry I mean RESCUED, yeah, that's the word.
Have a great day and go get your eyes checked.
Albertarosey
Alkbertarosey, I do have glasses. I'm cracking myself up now! It's always hard to tell what is in a person's yard and what's in the neighborhood. I'd wish I had a fence. So many planting possibilities, not to mention the privacy. It makes your yard look big even with the greenhouse already there.
Hi Billy Here's an adjacent view. The potential is hidden under all that white stuff. Spring,,,What spring???
Your lily babies will be beautiful. I have a similar one on order called Lady Like Maybe that's her. Hope It doesn't have a virus 'cause it aint no fun HOOKIN' lilies if'n ya cain't use 'em.
Bummer...I have to go to work.
Albertarosey
Ok, I'm confused and nosey...ARosey, I don't see the post where you listed an order you placed...What'd ya get and where?
Albertarosey, I'd think about the columnar arborvitaes to finish blocking the view of the old house. I really like mine. I got Emerald and they're only supposed to get 15' x 2' - 3' at the most. We have been loosely tying them together inside as they grow so the snow and ice don't splay them apart.
Here are three of them. The fourth, to the right has a security light behind it. That's why I wanted to plant them. It blinds us as we pull up in our driveway and of course, it's the neighbor's.
This is the east half of the garden. When it's warmer, DH will put the pitcher pump back out so I can wash spinich and other veggies in the old washtub. The table was his sister's pine privacy fence. He's a good builder! I have a pea fence to the right and cucumber fence to the left. We burn wastebaskets in the middle. I have two asparagus beds close to the compost pile by the alley. Not a lot of room to garden in, but it helps. Rhubarb is in front of the arborvitaes, but it's not up yet and needs transplanting before it gets too comfy. It was the only place I had to put it since it was a trade.
Moose, scroll halfway up the page. She has 3 posts in a row. It's quite a list.
A marble size bulb is small, but not tiny, IMO. I've received many bulbs like that or smaller, and was happy to get them. But they were all species, not hybrids.
Billy, I don't think that lily is virused. The two lower petals I think Ticker is noticing look to be either physically damaged or in the first stages of senescence (getting old). It helps that I can blow up the pic for better detail.
Thank you Leftwood, this is exactly why I suggested Billy ask someone who is more experienced at growing lilies than me. :) It's better to have someone look at the flower then to let it go and be sorry later. :)
It's better to have someone look at the flower then to let it go and be sorry later. :)
Definitely!
Good morning Billy and CMoose We had a very cold night last night and I was nervous to come home and check out the gh...a little chilly but all my flower plants and tomats were smiling at me as I ducked in the door. I have flats and flats of lovely annuals and perennials growing just in case I have tons of room left over after the lilies are planted :) I guess I can go into business sooner than I thought.
Billy, it looks like you are heavy into gardening. I'm jealous of all your space. It looks like you are a very busy girl in the summer! I like the idea of the columnar evergreens, at present I have a patio space made of 24" x 30" patio slabs and under the tarps is a shed waiting to be assembled in the spring. I could lift one of the slabs and plant a tree there. Worthy of some thought! Ya, a fence might help hide the truck and give you more privacy but I love the idea of a living fence too.
Chocolate (i love you just for your name's sake) How is it that you can plant out the first week in June being in zone 1a and I'm in zone 3b and wouldn't dream of planting any sooner than you??? Is there a trick to growing and storing dahlias? I grew some in Ontario (zone 5b) and they didn't make it when I stored them. Don't know what I did wrong. Ya think I have enough lilies on order?? Love em, love em, love em. I got them all over Canada, can send you a list of places if you like.
Here's a pic of Ladylike
Have fun dreaming of days to come...warmer days, that is..........Albertarosey
Thanks for the answer Leftwood. I'm glad to know it's ok. I thought maybe so, since it's looked the same way both years.
Ticker, viruses are a new subject for me too and I would have gotten rid of it if it was.
Albertarosy, I'm a couple days behind. Just as I was getting to my cold climate friends the other day, DD showed up for a suprise visit. Yesterday, as I was getting to them again, DH wanted to go to the cemetary and clean off his family gravesites. So, here I am now. How nice to have things growing already.
I store my dahlias in the house in a chilly closet, but I lose one or two tubers a year. They are just layered in a wooden flat with slatted sides. I wish I could have a basement where I could take care of things better. The tiny closet is blocked most of the winter and, out of sight, out of mind.
Ladylike is very pretty. I love the two colors together.
Here's Lovely Girl
Hi Billy Hope you had a great visit with DD. I'm so fortunate to have mine only 4 blocks away. I get to hold grand kids any time I want.
I was on a site the other day and saw a post of yours with a picture of 'muscadet' WOW it was superb!! How tall does it get?? What a beautiful lily. I think that every web site has a different height for their lilies. It's hard to plan a mass lily bed when you don't know the height they will grow to.
When storing the dahlias are they in peat or sawdust, moist, damp or dry? Are they bagged in plastic or paper?
CMoose cheats...she has her own fridge!
Well, I'm unusually tired tonight so have a good evening and I'll catch you later.
Albertarosey
Hi All...Had a family situation that took me away for awhile, but all is well and it's time to catch up...
Let's see...miscellaneous...
BillyP...I've found that even though they are very different in real life, I've seen pics of Matrix and Royal Sunset that make them look the same. There is a third one that photographs similiar also but can't remember what it is. My Matrix is electrically florescent, while my Royal Sunset is soft and muted....but I've seen other people's pics that make them look the reverse...BTW, I, too am droolingly envious of your gorgeous yard.
AlbertaR...Not sure why/how I plant out June1, other than if it's because I am so ready and I tell them to deal with it or what...??? I do a ton of stuff (3 tons, actually) in pots, but I still actually put plants in the ground right around June 1. Three years ago I was able to plant in the ground a week earlier, but this year I think we will still have three feet of snow on the ground in August...
Once I scrolled up and saw your list of lilies, I had to skim it and get out of that post. I was looking for a link when I said I couldn't find it. (Thanks Billy for the directions). Lilies are my addiction of choice, so I didn't dare read it carefully enough to look up each one. That ALWAYS costs me $$$. I'll have in the neighborhood of 100+ lilies this year. That is ridiculous when you consider I have to store 80% of them. I am a very sick girl....One of my goals this year is to label the pics of each lily. I have a bunch of pics, but don't remember who they are...duh. I've also realized I don't take pics of the whole plant (or the whole yard) so need to do better on that this year. Billy's long yard shots are beautiful....very inspiring...
Back to Billy...Where did you post your Muscadet pic? Love the size of the blooms. That is one of my Top 5 favorites. Who is your favorite lily vendor? Who is your favorite dahlia vendor?
