I still have lilies "hanging in there" and some whacked out Asiatics JUST opening today, mid-September...Lilies have been the saving grace of my gardens this year since despite all the weird weather, I have been fortunate enough to have had blooms since the 3rd week of May.
This first pic is a NOID I didn't like last summer so I stuck it in another bed (hoping it would not return)...But return it did, bigger and badder than it was...now I like it but don't remember what it is...LOL. It just opened it's first bloom for 2008 today, 9/14.
Am I Too Late To Post?
Tail end of what was a mighty mess of pink noid's...
How am I supposed to move, divide and plant new asiatics that were in pots this year if everybody just keeps on a bloomin'???
The new Lily Refrigerator gets delivered on Tuesday...whoo-hoo!...DH has his Beer (and soda and juice)Fridge, now I'll have my lily fridge...
LOVE them lilies! They are so worth all the work to grow them up here...but their own refrigerator...(They do have to share it with dahlia tubers, etc.)...I must be out of my mind...Sniffin' too much pollen...
What a treat to look at this morning...sweet!
It's NEVER too late to share lilies ~ even in the dead of winter. So glad you have beauties so late in the season.
Could your NOID be "Royal Sunset"? (Don't have it, but it's on my want list).
Lilies are welcome here any time. 'Arebesque' looks like it might be something else, but whatever it is, is a very nice looking specimen as well. Nice photo chocolate!
Maybe Tropical Dream for your NOID.
SIlly me...Looked at the wrong pot tag...Sumatra, not Arabesque
Pulled last years records and I believe the batch of pink NOIDS is Algarve, an LA which has survived three winters in the ground and multiplied...and I'm pretty sure the first pic is indeed Royal Sunset, also an LA...
Thanks for helping me sort out my children!...LOL
Oh Chocolate, please continue to post your wonderful lily pictures!! Mine are all done here and yours are a sight for sore eyes. :)
that is sooo pretty and delicate looking!
Wandas....She IS very pretty and delicate...What's her name?
Only thing pretty and delicate here is the early snow...and I'm not feelin' it's real pretty...
looks like the white martagon
L. martagon album?
yep, that's my guess
You've got it-- a young spring blooming L. martagon album. Lots of lily pics to sort and post--if I ever get caught up.
Chocolatemoose, I love all your lilies! Do you overwinter many in the ground? I just planted Sumatra last spring.
Wanda, love the pretty white!
Billyp...Only the Asiatics stay in the ground. None of the others will make it through our winters so they get dug and stored. I do MOST of my lilies and dahlias in pots for that reason. Once they are out of the garage where they start under lights, I have what I call my "pending bed" where they all sit until they are ready to come into bloom. Then they get to come play on the decks or in one of the raised beds.
At the beginning of the season, when we prep the beds, I commit to several spots in each bed by digging a hole the size of most of my pots, then I just switch lilies and/or dahlias in as they bloom, out once they've gone by. I made the investment over two years of a cabillion identical black plastic pots, so I just drop the ready to bloom lily in the hole and it blends with the annnuals because they are at the same ground level. Then they go back to the pending bed so they can do their energy storing till they get pulled and stored inside for the winter....I also do a lot of larger mixed containers and use the same concept. I put an empty pot in the container or barrel to act as a space saver. Then I plant around it with annuals or climbers, switching a lily or dahlia in or out all summer...And the Asiatics are the ones that make me crazy because they are stationary in the ground and I can't move them!...LOL
What size plastic pots do you use for your lilies Chocolatemoose? That sounds like a great idea. I may try swapping pansies, lilies, and coleus and mums. Room is at a premium at my house and that would give me more color year-round.
Susan
Susan, from what I've seen in pictures you've posted, you don't have any problem with year-round color. :)
Chocolate, I can overwinter mine in the ground, but how lovely to have them on the deck. I never thought of that perk. I don't exactly have a sitting deck, but I could set them close. Some of my lilies are too cloying up close.
Planting in pots also eliminates the danger of cutting into the bulb too. Mine seem to snake away from the original spot, so I dig wide and carefully till I find the bulb.
Hmmm, I might have to adopt some of your ideas. I have overwintered things in pots, buried to the rim.
Magnolialover gave me a link to ''Faraway Flowers'' and I'm going to look it over!! I'm excited!
Ah yes, Mags, the little enabler that she is! You are going to love Faraway Flowers, Billy!
Hi I've got my first LARGE order of lilies coming in April/May this year. I've spent days+++ on every site I can find in Canada researching lilies and compulsively ordering. I've got my heart set on 'Arena' but can't find it in Can. and the States don't seem to be able to ship it over the border. Does anyone know of a mailorder house that will ship to Can.? Oh-My-God!! what am I ever going to do with all these lilies.
I have never run across the term 'noids' is it an acronim for something?? I like the concept of putting them in pots, but what size and how deep.?
What a great site. Albertarosey
Lincolnitess/Albertarosey...I use primarily black nursery pots from the box store in what are labeled as 2 and 3 gallon, though I believe they are actually smaller. They are sturdier and a bit more decorative than the plain ole generic nursery puts. I will put up to (3) liliy bulbs (same type) in one pot and either leave as is or sink them into a hole in the ground as they go in and out of bloom. They are approximately 12 inches deep, but some are shorter/squatter, maybe 10" deep but wider across.
I also use the smaller (maybe 4x6?) more square rectangular pots for a smaller single lily bulb or group of bulbetttes. This is also almost always what I use for an Asiatic I'm letting bloom the first year so I can see the color and if I like it before deciding where it will be planted in the ground...or put up for adoption...LOL
Lincolnitess..."NOID stands for an unidentified lily, hence No ID (identification).
Welcome Albertarosey ~ we're glad you've found us.
ALBERTAROSEY, check with S-W Gardens in Ontario. They carry Arena.

Beware, you have entered the land of lily addiction here!!
Me too! I thought that something that beautiful and so fragrant surely must be tropical. Saw some potted at a local nursery and couldn't believe that they could grow here. And the rest is history.......
Lovely combination of phlox with Dizzy! Some of my co-workers say their lilies are already starting to grow. Haven't seen any in my yard yet, but know it won't be long now.
Susan
Albertarosey, will you be bringing your Orientals inside during winter or providing extra winter protection for them?
Thanks Susan. I love those phlox. They were from an old garden friend who died. I was to get anything I wanted from her beds. All the iris I made up names for were hers.
I don't think my lilies are ready to pop up yet. My ground refroze again.
hey chocalatemouse,,I have alot of those color lillies also and what was explained to me was cross=pollination, because I know I never bought any like that.. I have another post where someone explaines it very well,,if I find it Ill refer it to you... Dee
