Overwintering morning glories question

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Ron, it is still all confusing to me, I could have sworn I picked from one vine, then I remembered I have a terrible habit of grabbing at what I see is ready.. the big ones then, those were called the Scarlett o hara, and the picture you showed me of the swirling group of blooms look like my big blue mg, but it had a tri leaf..the smaller blue, purple and pink all had hair on them... I think since I do not really know what I have ( I ordered some last year from ebay) I am going to donate these to a school group and start from scratch with seeds I have gotten from here.. I just need to keep them separate and not mix them up. I have all the old vines in a big clump by colour bagged up and drying with about at least 1000 seeds each clump.. (or more?) I just didn't want them dropping all over the ground .. any thoughts on what I should do with these excess seeds?

some seeds were from the pic above, some from this one: notice the trilobe leaves?

and here are two more together..

and then there was this one, which I have two huge bags of vines with pods now.. (notice the blues behind this pink one) the blues are bagged up, and the purple ones are bagged up.. should I just toss them? LOL oh my goodness.. *sigh* it was nice watching them climb my pear tree to the top and all the other hedges and trees and even my lilac bush had them climbing...

This one appears to be a nice Ipomoea purpurea.

This one appears to be Heavenly Blue (Ipomoea tricolor - I look for the touch of yellow in the tube as a clue for this species)

and this one appears to be a nice white tube Scarlett O'Hara.

Good growing!

Debra, you can put you seeds up for postage in the seed trading forum as Purpurea mix. Someone can always use them.

Debra - I would certainly KEEP and regrow some of these vines. Especially if you have an area or a large tree that they can grow up! The I. purpurea are what I consider to be long MGs and do well without much fuss. Plant some of them in an area that you want to hide or cover and would like to see them return year after year. There is a place for I. purpurea. I have the Purple Flaked I. purpurea that I absolutely love. I will be growing that one every year as my plans stand now. :-) And I do run across others that I love.

And yes! You could offer them up on the seed trading forum! :-)

Hey Debra -

the sepals are the most reliable key to use when identifying the different species...the leaves can vary widely on many species...
Ipomoea purpurea

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/772071/
may have heart (cordate) shaped leaves or may have tri-lobed leaves

Ipomoea hederacea

may have tri-lobed leaves or may have heart (cordate) shaped leaves

You also apparently have both Ipomoea purpurea,Ipomoea hederacea and / or Ipomoea nil growing intertwined together

This photo here is an Ipomoea nil

notice the long sepals...

and a darker purple-blue I.purpurea to the upper left

This is Ipomoea purpurea, not any Ipomoea tricolor
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5761923

This is Ipomoea tricolor "Heavenly Blue"
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5761925

This may be an Ipomoea nil
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5761927
although the bloom size in relation to the leaf size looks small...it may be an Ipomoea purpurea and if it is / was the color is nice for a purpurea...

Good luck and Enjoy whatever you decide to do...

TTY,...

Ron
