A better pic of Ten-Ten. I hope this one makes lots of seeds

I just found your Ten-Ten photo, and loved it! I did a few morning-glory "season" a few years ago, growing pretty much every variety I could find, but I have never seen those, as yours, with spots!
Very nice - Thanks for the photo!

Thanks Karl, glad you liked it.

This Candy Pink looks awful because of the ratty leaves. Look at this flower she threw the other day along with a normal looking bloom. I tagged it.
I don't know her parentage.

Very nice blooms Jackie, I hope to grow Ten-Ten in the spring.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Nice Jackie! I am wondering how you feel about ten ten? I can't decide if I really like it or not...The one I grew inside last winter never impressed me much. Maybe it's better outside.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Ronnie - I wasn't as impressed with Ten Ten as I thought I would be when I grew it. If I want spotted blooms, I would now go with Hanafubuki or some other cultivar. (Much larger blooms and very pretty spots and colors!) So I would have to agree with you!

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

The relatively small red speckled kikyo flower may not be impressive by itself, but it has alot of potential for crosses and it is the only red speckled strain that is available here in the States...

Cross the only red speckled kikyo that we have with something else (!) to create something new and interesting (!)...

Ronnie, this is my first time to grow it and I do like it.
I love the red splatters like spilled paint.
Plus I won't ever forget that this one was priced so high, I thought it
would be yrs before I would have a chance to grow it.
Thanks to A for sharing seeds with me.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Ron, I agree about the crosses.

Thanks Helena.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Ron yours always thinking!! LOL

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

I really hope to grow this little beauty next year.

What a gorgeous pink bloom Beth, I love it.

Finally got a better shot of Fuji Shibori. Cool here last night, about 52
so the petals were dark purple

Sazanami Light Blue this morning. I really like the lacy petals and the colors.
The pink due to the cool night temps perhaps. This one still in a 3 inch peat pot.
Thanks to Gardener 2005 for sharing these seeds with me.

OK. I don't have any new MG that are blooming, but I've had these buds for a while (over a week). I think (and hope) this one will open tonight.

Has anyone had any luck crossing Ten Ten (first photo in this thread)?

Here is Ipomoea obscura Bone Yellow, up close and personal.

Thumbnail by

Here is Bone Yellow with Keniaki for comparison. I would have included Ethiopia in the picture but it has not flowered yet (it will soon).

Some measurement statistics (based on four flowers per I. obscura type):

Diameter of the flat front or face of the flower
Bone Yellow: 35mm average
Keniaki: 22mm average

Length from bottom of calyx to point where the flower flares out (external measurement)
Bone Yellow: 15mm
Keniaki: 11mm

Inside length of the tube from bottom to the outside "edge" of the tube
Bone Yellow: 11mm
Keniaki: 7mm

Here is an image of the sepals of Bone Yellow together with sepals of Keniaki.

Another sepals view, perhaps a better angle, Ron?

Joseph - :-) I was just looking up "yellow" blooming MGs online. That's cool that you posted photos of 2 of yours! Very nice!

My Moonflower vine against the side of my house has finally grown a good size and is starting to bloom. Apparently it bloomed several times already as I saw some plump seed pods already formed on this vine. I bet the hummingbird moths pollinated those blooms! :-)

This is the only flower blooming tonight. And the smell is heavenly!!! I can't help but grow this vine every year! I truly love it!

Thanks, Becky, I need to grow that moonflower, I like fragrant vine flowers.

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Joseph - Great photo comparisons of the different strains of the Ipomoea obscura...

"Diameter of the flat front or face of the flower"

This part of the corolla is called the limb...

Photo sepal closeups would also be very helpful of both edges of the intermediate type of outer sepal that has 1 edge overlapped and 1 edge fully exposed...

TTY,...

Ron

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Joseph I really like the color of the bone yellow one!!!

Nice moonflower Becky

Jakie and Beth nice speckels!! I find though that most of them don't open all the way and look all distorted.

I guess I will need to buy a magnifying glass to see that character, Ron, because I can't seem to detect it by looking through the camera. A link to an web page that has a line drawing would be ideal for me so I can get the proper search image.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Ronnie. So cool here the last 2 nights, that Ten-Ten hasn't opened all the way, looking stunted. Neither has Blue Asagao or A's cross, B Asagao x Fuji Shibori.. On the other hand, my Fuji Shibori blooms and Sazanami Light have turned into 2 day blooms, not bothering to close.
Becky, love the Moonflower, I still want to grow one, maybe this coming spring.
Joseph, how long have keniaki and Bone Yellow been blooming? Does
ethiopia always bloom late in the yr like ochracea?
Can't wait to see ethiopia blooming. A beauty with the dark eye.

I planted Keniaki and Bone Yellow at the same time and Keniaki was first to flower up, which has been at least a month now. Bone Yellow started flowering about 1 or 2 weeks ago, whatever the date was on the initial photo I I posted in the MG thread. I planted Ethiopia at least a month ago, and it now has flower buds on it. They seem to be late season flower makers when compared to JMGs.

Thanks Joseph.

Joseph - I sent you a d'mail...

This is one of Karen's. I thought that she might want to take a look at it. Very different from the other blooms on this vine.

Ipomoea tricolor 'Wedding Bells' is starting to flower up! The pinkish color is very subtle in the dawn light.

Here is the same flower using the flash, making the pink color come alive.

Joseph, I love Wedding Bells, a beautiful m glory.

Melanie, very nice bloom.

My Blue Youjiro

Thumbnail by patootie

Thanks, Jackie, it must be awesome when the entire trellis has these flowers. The blue youjiro I like very much too. Yours has quite complete and distinct white bands. Is that one grown from seeds out of a commercial packet or is it from a generation or 2 down from the foil packet?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Meag - Pretty bloom! I like all the colors on it!

Joseph - I like your Wedding Bells! Are the flowers always kinda "square" shaped like that?

Jackie - Love your BLUE Youjiro! I've not seen the blue before! Really striking!!!

This is the first time I've grown Wedding Bells, and this is the first flower; I've seen reports of other tricolor flowers being square shaped so perhaps this one will be that way too? Time will tell.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Joseph and Becky. Joseph, I had purchased these seeds from Parks about 8 or 10 yrs ago as Mt Fuji Mixed. These are several generations removed from the original seeds. These come up from dropped seeds every yr.

The Flying Saucers I grew in 06 made the square blooms quite often.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I have a few new vines blooming today, along with some that I've had since April (much to my surprise!).

Here is "Fuji Shibori" from Anoinette. I really like the spotted blooms. This one is really pretty and I know some others have grown this one this year, too! We had a heavy rain last night, so the blooms are kinda beat up today.
