Can anyone identify a plant that appeared in my suburban Chicago garden? The foliage looks a bit like a columbine (I have some planted nearby), but the plant is immune to leafminers. It has little yellow clustered flowers. The weirdest thing about it is that it bleeds bright orange (think hunting or highway construction apparel) from both the stems and the longish tap root. Any ideas?
Blaze orange sap
Can you post a picture?
check out Greater Celandine, it's in the poppy family and the sap is toxic.
I agree, Celandine. Don't let that orane/red stuff get on your skin.
Greater celandine it is. Thanks - you all rock.
Sorry, but I couldn't post a picture. We've had eleven inches of rain in the last two days, and the greater celandine may have drowned along with everything else....
Don't worry about that it's only the plants you truely love that drown not the ones you really don't care about. Becareful with that sap!
