California Lilacs (Ceanothus spp.) turning yellowish

Woodinville, WA

I am a beginning gardener, 3 years in the making. Please be patient....learning curve applies.

I have 3 beautiful Ceanothus in my garden. My neighbors are not doing as well. They have a yellowish tinge to the foliage. We live in zone 8, I water, she does not. I have read that Ceanothus do not require much water. Do you have any idea what might be causing the yellowish foliage?

Thanks,

Can you post a picture? Once they're established they don't need a lot of water, but if this is their first year in the ground then they would need more. If you don't have a picture (or even if you do) it would help to know what the other conditions are like--are they in full sun or are they maybe getting too much shade? Are they sitting in a low spot where water might sit for too long when it rains? Is her soil heavy clay while yours has been amended and drains nicely? How has she been fertilizing? Also, are they the same type of Ceanothus as yours?

Mine are beginning to turn yellowish now too, but that is because here in UK, we are into the cooler weather and they loose their leaves for winter, I would imagine in your zone, they will need some water to keep the foliage and flowers healthy and because they will have a longer flowering season than mine, they will require some form of fertilisation either by mulching with organic matter or shop bought feeds for that type of shrub. I also think all the points Ecrane mentioned are worth checking out too as it could be a number of reasons causing the leaves to turn yellow, even sap eating insects etc, so maybe send a picture and more info as mentioned, good luck.
