Fall planting and maintenance

Perry, MO(Zone 5a)

Okay, it is almost fall in zone 5. Hard to believe! I began gardening last summer, and this spring I realized that I missed a lot of opportunities by not planting seeds and/or preparing soil last fall. Please offer any tips: what to be doing, what to be planting, things you wish you would have known as a new gardener! Thanks!

The one thing I wish that I had known 50 years ago.

Deep till in the fall between first frost and first freeze

This will kill over 90% of the bugs and diseases that overwinter in your soil.

Byron...when you say deep till...about how far down is it for you?

If you till and prepare your soil in the fall all you have to do is lightly break it up in spring. You can start your early planting without much trouble. Any new beds need to be dug and bordered in the fall also. It is much more pleasant in the fall, you have more time because you aren't trying to do all you planting, tilling, and ect at the same time. Also it gives the bed a chance to rest and settle.

I'm planing on expanding and pulling together a couple of beds and making the kitchen garden closer to the kitchen. I also have that lovely pile of wood and bark chips to get scattered so I can see the plants next spring, rather than having to dig them out of the weed refuse like this year. The dry summer has put the weeds into early retirement, so it has been a great time to yank what's left and pile on the chips.
