Hi,
I have spare space under my front steps, it gets morning sun only.
It had ferns growing there but they got some sort of white disease and I pulled them out.
Any suggestions on what might love to live there??
Debi
Spare space
Since I can't see the entire area, I'm guessing here. If you have room, you could put a trellis and let a clematis grow up it. I have a clematis that gets only east sun and it's growing beautifully and blooms very prolifically every year. I'm not sure why your ferns had problems there but I have Southern Wood fern that I grow on the north side of my house and it loves it there. It would look real nice in front of a clematis.
A groundcover?
Hi,
Thanks Guys I was thinking of the "not much sun" thing.
I wondered weather the white disease thing was Mealy Bug and if so, would I have to treat the ground first???
How far back did you mean for the trellis?? To be able to plant in front of it??
What you see is under steps and the watering can is against the house.
I would love to be able to put something with colour, do you think daylilies might grow there or not enough sun, because they like alot of sun don't they??
Thanks heaps my new friends,
Debi
Daylilies do well in part sun-sun
Hostas.Lanium,Lungwort, some of the variegated mints,Coral Bells, and Campanulas are a few.I'm not sure what grows well in an area as warm as yours. Also, what seasons are you looking for the most color or would a bed of foliage plants with silvers, greens, blacks and plums, for example,be a good choice for you?
Lynn
Hi Lyn, so nice of you to take the time to suggest some things.
When I say color, I think I mean just assorted color's that are all year round. Not nessesarily flower's, foliage would be ok as well.
There are some beautiful plants that have beautiful foliage, without flower's.
The soil is not to good but I am not an expert on soil.
Maybe I just nedd to dig it up a bit??
I will go out now and get a better picture from under the steps.
Thanks Heaps,
Debi
Debi,
This looks like an interesting site http://www.anbg.gov.au/flora/index.html .As far as your soil goes, you could spade in some good compost to get the plants off to a good start.
Lynn
