Hi Gang;
I need your assistance for a research project I'm doing for a historical group I belong to. (SCA) The project is about chickens and how one would go about creating a new breed of chicken. Time period is 15th century and although the breeds I'm working with aren't from that time period, the process would be the same. I want to include in my documentation how chickens have infiltrated our language even today. I'm looking for any phrases that come from an understanding of poultry, specifically chickens, many of which people today don't even realize have to do wtih chickens. Of course when I sit down to write them, they all escape me...so, hence the request for help. The ones I can think of are "pecking order", "birds of a feather", ....you are getting the picture. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'll print out the whole list once it's compiled and thanks in advance.
Sarah
chicken phrases.. help please
Like... Flew the coop?
Don't count your chickens before they hatch?
"Do'nt be pickin on others " "Before the cock crows" "Settin Pretty" "Poppy Cock"
{I'm still thinkin sara be back}
" The feathers were flyin" "your writeing looks like "Chicken Scratch"
"Gettin up with the Chickens" "Going to bed with the Chickens" "Mad as a wet Hen"
This one is a very old country saying more of a joke when an answer to a question ask is I Might>>>>>>>>
" You Might well Mites are on a chickens rear end "
There are a fair number of rude ones that deal with umm...domestic bliss:
He thinks he's the cock o the walk
P H. (edited) When was this not chickens?
Hen-pecked (though usually in reality it's the roo)
Cocktail

Okay I found It, but I don't know how to put in the link. Can anyone help??
Sheila
knslwilliams,
Is this the thread you are talking about?
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/829210/#top
LOL!! That link was so funny i had forgot alot of those HA HA HA !!!
As this is a middle ages historical group, where things we might consider off color today may not have been then, and, as I am not easily offended, I would be interested in the phrases that would be considered too x rated for a public forum... SO..in the interest of not offending anyone, please send those to me privately.
Great start folks!!!Thanks so much for your assistance!!
Sarah
Sorry guys,
but I've never heard that this was ever anything but chickens and it's far too apt. And it never would have gotten there outside of specifically chicken related terminology and study.
jasmerr-
That is the link I was thinking of but how do you do the hyperlink??????
Thanks-
Sheila

Sheila,
When you are in that thread go to the address bar (where you would type in www.davesgarden.com) highlight and copy the address for that thread. Then paste it in your message.
Hope this answers your question.
Jody
Thanks Jody for the info. I was always wondering how people do those links.
Sheila
Since it just isn't going to die.. and we are losing a contributing member of our chicken family over this dispute;
I did a google for the meaning of p*-*-*h**d:
It said "American slang for a slow-witted, clumsy, stupid person"

Oh Josh.. so sweet and innocent....
OK, since we're still beating the dead horse, can I please ask, too? I have no idea what PH would stand for... and based on the reaction, I'm thinking that in the NW its not that big of a deal...
think what chickens do when they eat
Thanks Lucky and those that filled me in. HA!
I still don't know:0(
Maybe it is all for the best.
well, i was checking a couple of times today in the breeder pen [penthouse #3] to see how many we had.... and Apricot kept Pecking me on my Head! actually on the brim of my cap. anyhow so i called him one...
ROFLMAO! TF ... you're BAD! ;~)
well, he HAS had serious social problems, being hatched by a duck then riased in the house through the winter. nearly a year old and can barely convince a few hens that is IS a roo. and clumsy is an understatement. pea brained idiot too. but the best looking buckeye roo in the US of A! still quite the PH...
lol... so I have one that pecks my hand when I dont have any treats... does that make her a pecker hand or a hand pecker?!
LOL pecker finger maybe sounds better
All right youse guys.
What a rooster does with a hen he wishes to dominate is (after dancing around in a rather obvious fashion) Peck her Head. If she submits, grasps her firmly by the shoulders. Then flogs her mercilessly in a manner only to be discussed on more scientific forums. This and maintaining the right to do this are his primary concerns as an adult male of the species. The term in question (and Har and I are on great terms after figuring out that you all won't kill us) is derogatory in that it minimalizes male intelligence and can be construed to mean it's lowest most 'common' denominator. I (as usual) was only thinking of the apt rooster comment and not the worse interpretation. Harmony thought I was referencing the worst.
When blatherers are oblivious...
Hey Grow Thanks and when the Chowder??
