Advice - growing fruits/veggies on screened porch.

Charleston, SC

I live in a condo in SC but have a large screened porch and would like to start a garden (in pots). Some of the porch is shaded all day, and some of it gets indirect light for most of the day. Does that sound like something I could do? If so, which kinds would be easiest as this is my first attempt?

Thanks!

Can't think of a lot that would be able to tolerate the conditions you list. You might have success with cucumbers growing up a trellis in the indirect light though.

For the part of your porch that is shaded all day, I really don't see much chance of success with vegetables there. For the parts that get the *very* best indirect light, I agree that cucumbers might be worth a try. You might also want to try a cherry tomato. For whatever reason, cherry types will generally produce better in lower light conditions. I've grown Matt's Wild Cherry before in a corner of my yard that got little direct sun. Up against a 7' fence on two sides (with even taller shrubs on the other side of the fence) and a large maple tree on the third side. Only open side was the north. It still managed to do fairly well. I've also had other cherry types do well in less than optimal sun conditions, but that is one personal example I could think of that might be very low light, like your situation.

I dunno, maybe some leaf lettuce could possibly work too.

Another thing you might consider is putting a couple of grow lights aimed at your plants to help boost the indirect light situation you have. I've heard of others in similar porch situations doing this, and the comments were generally favorable.

Let us know how it turns out. :-)
