Wood chip mulch

Clinton Township, MI(Zone 6a)

I have been lucky enough to get free wood chips delivered by utility line clearing crews working in my area. We are talking LOTS of chips!!! I primarily plan to use these to mulch around large areas of pines so I can stop mowing between them. The problem is that the chips are of mixed wood AND some of it has a great deal of leafy debris also. I'm not worried about leaves per se since they will just decompose. But I know there is at least some black walnut in some of the piles.

How worried should I be spreading this around pine trees. Half of the trees are older established Austrian Pines and half are young established pines of mixed variety.

Thanks for any help

Sorry I don't have an answer for you. If it were me, I would call a Nursery and ask them. I wouldn't call HD or Lowes. I hope this helps, Smokey

If you google "planting under walnuts" or "juglone tolerant plants" you'll find some lists of the plants that aren't bothered by the walnuts--if your trees are on those lists then you can probably feel good about it. Or someone may come along and know off the top of their head whether pines are OK with walnuts or not. If they're not on the OK with walnuts list then it would depend on how much of the wood chips is black walnut--if there's only a little tiny bit of that in there then it may not cause problems for you, but if it's a large percentage or if you have no way of knowing, then I'd probably get my mulch elsewhere.
