Hurricane Ike Watch

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

Still early, but time to pay attention to Ike, if you're not already. They're getting ready with buses, shelters, etc. in San Antonio. I heard of one group of people that hadn't yet left S. A. for home after the last hurricane, so they're waiting to see what happens with this one. Like an extended vacation, maybe?

POOP! Stupid thing needs to go somwheres else!

Yeah! Anybody know any uninhabited place it could go? Maybe we could send it back out to open sea somewhere? Corpus is right in its sights right now. But tomorrow, who knows?

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

King Ranch.. South of Corpus

There's about 70-something miles of uninhabited coastline. Only thing it'd mess up is fenceline & cows...

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Oh boy... path predicted back into habitation, again...

(Phyllis) Flint,, TX(Zone 7b)

well I'm still hopin and prayin it goes else where or dies down before it hits land ..I know once in the gulf they pick up steam but there's always hope

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

King Ranch would be a good destination. The cows have enough sense to move inland and hunker down in a storm. Now Ike has slowed down a bit. He's going to keep us guessing for a while.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It's definately been keeping the Hurricane Center hopping, trying to keep up with where it's headed. That thing looks as big as Texas!

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

ah poop....

it's going to be a mess here if it goes like the NHC says.

ahh poop

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

workers all have homes on the King ranch..There are 100's of homes within the ranch..

Victoria, TX(Zone 9b)

It's still not as populated as, say, Port O'Connor, or Port Lavaca...

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

Kingsville Texas is right there its got Texas A&M I live within 10 miles of the King Ranch
Ricado, Riviera, Premont, Alice and Falfurrias are there so yes more populated ..

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Kingsville and surrounding areas are definitely more populated than most folks think. We used to have a deer lease on King Ranch and a hurricane in the area will be devasating. Praying for ANYONE in it's path. We're hunkering down and planning for the worst here (which will be wind damage and possible power outages). Will know by tomorrow night if I need to move lawn furniture and potted plants inside. Hoping for the best with newly planted trees. Already stocked up.

Stay safe, emh.

Katy, TX(Zone 8b)

We are moving plants, feeders, lawn furniture in the garage. The big potted plants will be tipped over and the largest leaves on the plumerias are being pulled. We are hoping that the huge pines in our front yard don't go but pines will be pines, you know. The birds have been filling up today. We've had numerous different birds here. IT is said that birds and animals can tell when something is "up". I just wish that no one had to suffer from this or any other storm.

Really!?
That is definately something to pay attention too.
Guess I better take all the hanging stuff down tonight...again..
Rita blew the next door neighbors Pecan tree over..it was huge..100 years old..so at least I don't need to worry about that.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I back up to an old pecan orchard and I'm a little worried about some of those trees ending up on my roof. What a nightmarish way to get a roof replaced. After the luck I've had this year....don;t even want to think about it.

Randy, I know what you mean. I took all the hanging stuff down before the one before Gustav (can't keep up with the names anymore) and I just got everything back in place 2 weeks ago. Gotta do it again? Bummer.

Ann, I never thought about just tipping my big pots over. Good idea. Save my back.

I wonder what other signs the little critters might offer us.

Keep your fuel tanks loaded, too.

If you stuff your freezers you have a better channce of keeping things cold longer - with no power. Use empty jugs, etc and freeze water if nothing else - you may need that anyway - and if nothing happens - it provides a slow drip for plants later.

A bag of charcoal and a small grill would allow for some hot food and beverages.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Got all that. Filled the vehicles up this morning. Medications filled today too. We pour a little water out of several gallons of water and keep those in the freezer. Lot's of candles, plenty of flashlights, lot's of batteries, several radios, lots of board games and books, lot's of 'good' food to make it a little fun and plenty of pet food. Getting all the laundry done tomorrow. Put all the storm windows down. All that's left is bringing things inside or moving them into the shed.
Fortunately, we have a gas stove so, cooking is still possible if the power goes out. We have a charcoal grill too.

Hope everyone else is ready. Still waiting to hear if Ft. Bend ISD is closing.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

They moved the path a little farther north, and are reminding everyone that they are historically off by up to 200 miles from 2-3 days out. That still leaves a lot of leeway for where it will actually come on shore.

Yeah I just saw the northward turn too.
I filled up my tank already too. I think I'll ATM some cash out tonight.
I may have to relocate to our emergency bunker. CO runs the entire airline from this building downtown, and we have leased an old Nuclear Fall out Shelter some 30 miles north of the Woodlands. Some eccentric millionaire built it in the 70's, is very thorough complete bunker with work facilities, sleeping facilities..(we go to the Marriot).

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Quoting:
(we go to the Marriot).

ROLFOLOL!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL..we have our priorities!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Room service during a hurricane. Can't beat that! Let me know what time the party starts. I'll bring some smoked salmon and vino. LOL.

Always best to be safe than sorry....regardless of how 'off' the forecasters may be. Sure looks like they're getting better and better at this stuff. They were right on the money 5 days out with Gustav.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

mmm...sounds good.

This one has really kept them guessing though

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

up, down, north, south....makes you dizzy

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

true..the size of it makes me dizzier

Letting you know that everyone that may be in Ike's path is in my prayers. We're following the track as well and praying for safety. Just letting you know you aren't alone.

Jan

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

well...the meeting about moving has just ended..and we are moving starting Fri morning...winds are forecasted up to 70kt - winds starting on friday.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, Jan.

Good luck on the move, Randy. We're staying put.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I think the western half of the state is in the path of Ike in one way or another! If we get any heavy winds up here, it just might do in my Butterfly Bush. The DFW are has alreay begun preparations for evacuees. School buses have been sent to a staging area in San Antonio to bring back people who don't have transportation. I heard earlier that they had already started evacuating in some areas near Victoria.

If you don't have the Golden Triangle Weather page bookmarked, you'll want to check it out for lots of hurricane information. Sometimes the page doesn't load because it's updating, so you might need to hit the refresh button on your browser.

mm are you talkin the Marriott at the galleria??
I wont be there till the weekend of Oct 31 for a wedding so hope it stays safe and you could bring salmon and vino to my room then LOL

But joking aside I am praying it dies down more before it gets to land (I know wishful thinking)
I know regardless of where ti lands I am going ot prepare for the TD up here and move my plumies and citrus inside again
and keep praying for eveyone down there

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

DH has lived in the area (Houston) most his life and weathered the storms but is concerned we might need/want a generater. What do ya'll suggest??? We're in NW area.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We're staying put for now. If we did leave, it would only be to dh's sister's place in The Woodlands.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It wouldn't hurt, if only because it is one less thing you have to worry about. Especially with the new little one. :-)

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Would we be okay with just something small to run the fridge or go all out????

Yeah, don't want to lose all that milk in the freezer! :(

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I just took my name off the relocation list....I mean..I have friday and saturday off work...I should take the blessings afforded me! and having the days off is definately one. They are going to do 12 hour shifts. I'd rather lay in bed. Some things are not work time and half pay.

Houston, United States(Zone 9b)

Do you all have generators???

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

one of my co workers has one.
He alternates the refridgerator and a wall unit ac.
Unless your freezer has 10 months of food in it, I don't see the need, but mabe someone else can shed light on that.
