Dear Fellow Beginner gardeners, I have to pass along my 'beginner' success. We have a 'shady acre' and I'd struggled for a few years now (ok, 10!) trying to get it right with blooms. I had 3 old begonia plants that I brought with us 15 years ago, and it dawned on me last fall when they were about the only thing blooming - huge happy blooms, with zero maintenance each year. Maybe begonias would do well here? DUH. So with my fingers crossed, I ordered 30 tubers from www.willowcreekgardens.com. They were reasonably priced, offered a great selection. VOILA THE ANSWER TO MY SHADY ACRE ! Every single tuber has exploded into a huge, healthy, bountiful plant! VERY HAPPY with the quality from Willow Creek Gardens! Good luck to you !
GREAT results with begonias!
Great job! They are beautiful. Thanks for the info and for sharing your beautiful picture.
It is a true saying, there is no such thing as cant find plants that grow well in my plot, you have just proved the point there are plants for everyone to enjoy, well done for your perseverance all those years, now start to search for others that like the same conditions and I am sure you will end up with a huge collection to enhance your garden/patio.
If you fancy the job, you can remove the male flowers (smaller single blooms) as they start to develop either side of the females (the double bigger flowers) then you will get even larger blooms, to remove the males, this stops the plants using energy and it sends this energy onto the double female flowers, I do this just as the flower buds are about the size of my fingernail.
As these are in pots, give them a liquid feed when you water, about once every 2 weeks feed at half dose should do and dont let the water sit inside the tubers indent or it could rot the stems, I water from the bottom. I am so pleased for you, you should be really proud of your hard work over these years. good luck. WeeNel.
