pin oak

Waynesville, NC(Zone 7a)

would it be okay to trim some low limbs my pin oak right now the trees 3 years old and some limbs are touching the ground

Woodway, TX(Zone 8a)

If pin oaks are white oaks, anytime is OK. If they are red oaks, arborists recommend doing it either in the heat of the summer or in the winter because of the danger of disease spread by insects. To be safe, I'd wait until after your first freeze.

thankyou what do the rest of you think

Just to be real safe, I always prune all my trees in the winter (January down here) while the sap is not flowing. Losing too much sap can weaken a tree.

It would be helpful if you tell us what you want to hear so someone can submit it.

would it kill it to trim it now or hurt it

Woodway, TX(Zone 8a)

You have the only answer, and a professional arborist would tell you the same thing for a $250 consultation fee. Trees are best trimmed during the hottest or coldest weather. The reason is that insects are less prevalent, and insects spread disease.

It depends--what exactly are you calling a pin oak? There is a pin oak but lots of folks I know mistakenly call a live oak a pin oak.

go ahead and cut the branches down but don't go passed the area of raised bark. This is the collar and it produces speacialized cells that wuill seal off and produce and bark like cells that heal the area. If you cut through this or into it it will take a long time to heal and most of the time insects and diseases will be introduced into the area before it heals. So, that was my $200.00 consultation I'll put it on your tab.

Pin Oaks are in the red oak family. All red oaks will have a "point" on the tips of the leaves. White oaks will not. Here is a link from MU about trimming trees. They will have a lot of stuff that is Ag related.
