Impatiens seeds

Otsego, MI(Zone 5b)

I've never collected these seeds before and would like to. After the flower is finished blooming there is a little green thing in the middle of the flower, is this the seed? Or is it the pod that has seeds in it? They are really small.

After the flowers have dried on the plants, you will be able to remove the petals and the seed capsules will be more evident, yes they are tiny, I am unsure if your plants are able to give you seeds that will germinate, there are lots of these type of plants that are known as FI types and the seeds are sterile, if this is the case, then you can make more plants by taking cuttings from the parent plants, to do this, select a good healthy stem and remove the bottom leaves with a sharp knife so the stem is clean and no rough ragged bits, then sit the stem in a jar of cold water, remove any flowers from the stem/s so the cutting will use energy making roots instead of more flowers, after a few weeks, you should find roots growing, when there are enough roots to sustain the cutting, put it into some compost in a pot and it should grow on to look like the parent plant, by the way sit the jar in good light but not direct sunlight. good luck. Some impatiens also tend to have "explosive" seeds once they're ripe--that's why some of them have gotten the common name "touch me not". Once the seeds are ripe, if you touch the pod it will shoot seeds everywhere. So if you're hoping to collect the seeds, I'd carefully put a plastic bag around the seed pod, then touch it and the seeds should explode into your bag.

Oh my....thanks for the information guys...maybe mine aren't ripe yet. It may be better to just buy a pack of seeds from the store, at least I know they won't be sterile.
Thanks again,
Mary
