Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

pelletory, Thanks! Question for you if you don't mind...You wrote that you make your feeder in a large pyrex measuring cup...I didn't quite understand that... Do you mean that you mix the food in a p-cup? Or you actually made a feeder from a p-cup?

Elphaba, I like the looks of that feeder, Now you'll always know where to find the hummer when he's around!

carol13, I can tell your excitement by the way you wrote it! Those hummers can be so captivating! Hope 'Santa' gets you that camera for Christmas!

nanny_56, I think I lost track of days with the holiday too! .. I enjoyed the photos!

f_chisolm, What a beautiful series of photos and great captions! My fav is the "In-coming spotted!"

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Frank, that series cracked me up! Well done! Nanny, yours looks like a little workout at the gym.

No one seem to care for the Hummzinger Little Fancy feeder so 2-3 weks ago I moved it to the back yard. All of sudden it was the most popular feeder and is now prime property!

Hi Iris, I meant I mix it in the cup.

Love the tomato gaurdian!

Wonderful pics everyone!

Greenville, SC(Zone 7a)

Mrs_Ed, Thanks! Is the feeder that hummers on big or does it just look that way? How many slurping holes are in it? Nice photo btw.
nanny, I had one of those humzingers before, The hummers didn't seem very interested in it, But, I did see bees and butterflies on it. Nice photos.
pelletory, Thanks! ...And thats what I thought you meant.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

They always liked the Hummzinger Ultra, but for some reason the Little Fancy did not get their fancy! It is not near as nice as the ultra though.

Iris. Nope, that's a small feeder, but has lots of holes (maybe 8??).

Here is a wider shot for size.

Ohhhhhh....my adult males seem to be gone! No sign of Ed this morning and this little one has been perching on Ed's hook.:(

I'm not surprised Ed is gone he was quite the litlte butterball on the last pic I saw :-). Very nice pic nanny!

I heard the First Nature feeder changed the size of their portals and too many bugs were getting in the nectar so now their going to try and change them again.

That is the one great thing about the hummzinger, the portals are very small and with the inside bee guards I rarely see any bugs in the nectar. I've only seen 1 minut (sp?) bug in there all summer.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Mrs. Ed, I was so excited when you said that feeder had attracted so many hummers. I couldn't wait to be buzzed! This morning, I was excited because there were two hummers fighting over it. Then, my neighbor Ed, yes that's right, Ed started crushing cans and scared them away. Those Eds can be a problem!

Iris, I liked the look of the feeder too and I liked it b/c it was mostly metal and glass, but I didn't realize how heavy it would be! Still, it doesn't blow around much in the wind, so that's good. I'm sure I'll take it down before Ike comes though.

Really sensational pictures everyone. It felt like I'd only been away from this thread for a minute and boom, y'all had posted tons of fab photos!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Yeah...I noticed even the juvies and females are getting a little filled out too...so won't be long. Last year I did get migrators for a couple weeks after ours left though!

I sure hope Rose gets her computer fixed soon, I can imagine the commotion at her place with all the hummers!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Yeah, she probably has enough pics to get us through the winter! LOL

I miss her tho'

Question, guys-

Do juvenile male ruby-throats have the red throat already?

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Not a full red throat. They may have a small bit of red showing or have the "5 o'clock shadow look like in my last pic posted. It does vary from bird to bird.

See the tiny bit of red on this one...

Thumbnail by nanny_56
Marlton, NJ

Hi carol, Their throats start out with what looks like these dark spots on it, then the ruby feathers come in a few at a time usually.

Thumbnail by pelletory
Marlton, NJ

Here's one w/ just a few ruby feathers.

The immature males will also have white tail tips which will darken as they mature.

Females have white tail tips their whole lives.

Ok, so mine's definitely a girl, & "Ruby" she'll stay (otherwise it was gonna be
"Ruben").
