Morning Glories 2008 #17

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks everyone . . .

Really nutty people that didn't leave Galveston. They had plenty of time to get out as well as transportation. So, there is absolutely no reason anyone is still there.
You have probably heard what they were told:
"Stay and you are facing certain death"

My daughter lives less than 15-miles from Galveston and she and family left yesterday early am and are now safely in Austin. She will be lucky that their home is still there when they can return.

At this exact time, the winds in Galveston are now being clocked at 87 mph - and the peak won't reach until 4 or so more hours. Only 1 more mph and it will be a cat. 3. But it is so humongous the category really doesn't matter, the water is what is going to be the problem.

Horrible, Huge, Monster!

Emma - Did Ike ever make it to cat 3? I've been watching the news. Anyone who has ever been through a hurricane personally knows the damage that can happen and I really feel for y'all! {{{hugs}}}

Back in April I planted a bunch of different cultivars. Well, I cleaned out the old vines around my picket fence garden bed. But I never quite got around to cleaning out the potted vines. Well, I sprayed them with CS to kill the rust fungus. And two of the pots have the vines coming back! LOL!

I have new vines growing along the picket fence, but none have blooms yet. I'll probably see some this week. But in the meantime, my original potted vines are blooming again! LOL! Who woulda guessed they would make such a great comeback. Each vine has several blooms on it this morning!

This looks like a lavender or pink Sunsmiles vine. It was in the shade which makes it look a little darker, so it is probably a light lavender color.

And this one I believe is Mini Bar Rose?

Becky -

IKE blasted in at 110 mph hitting Galveston dead center - remaining a strong category 2, 1 more mph and it would have been a 3. However, the category makes zero difference with this particular storm because it was so huge at about 600 miles across. The water and flooding is the major factor. I am just now starting to listen to the news. The eye is still over Houston and is still packing a powerful punch. Even famous Brennans Restaurant in Houston burned to the ground.

We are starting to get very high winds in Jacksonville so we are in for a ride as well. Hopefully we won't lose power as most of Houston has.

Pretty blooms Ronnie, Jackie, Emma, Snug, Melannie and Becky.

Hope everyone stays safe from the storm.

luvsgreatdanes, you said those pale pink throated white s were volunteers, do you have any ID for them at all? I have some (nearly) identical (no pics yet sorry) and wonder if they are named something I would recognize as I do not recall buying them. Have just the one plant, but its flowering well, but 12 feet high, so i dunno if I will be able to get seeds form it this winter, Also dunno how to do hyperlinks for sure, lol ~gotta read that again but this was the shortcut I could get to the pic?
thanks! :Darren

Gorgeous blooms Becky, love the lavender.

Emma, praying that you and your family will remain safe and that any damage is
minimal. Please continue to keep us updated.

Thanks Helena.

Darren the flower you inquired about is a purpurea cross I believe, so no true name that I know of sorry.

Becky I really like your lavender sunsmile!!

mine is a purpurea too, but don't remember the seeds tho, just 'cousins' probably~~LOL thanks!
:D

Here is one that came out of a Japanese commercial MG packet with the name 'Shiborizaki'; there were several forms that came from the packet, and this one had dark colored seeds.

Here's another form from that same packet, and it too had dark seeds. I used the seed color this year to try to separate out the different lines.

Thumbnail by

I kinda like this one, also from the Shiborizaki packet, and it having more purple and less white.

I like that one too Joseph!!

Ukigomo is also making a couple different forms. There is this one, one of my faves.

Thumbnail by

Then there is this nice blue form.

Thumbnail by

Here is a new one, Ipomoea obscura Bone Yellow. It has a nice delicate yellow color, and its flower is larger than that of Keniaki or Ethiopia I. obscura. It reminds me of the yellow of Hewittia malabarica.

Thumbnail by

As a comparison, here is Ipomoea obscura Keniaki.

Thumbnail by

Here is a photo of Hewittia malabarica to show the yellow of its flower.

Thumbnail by

And Ipomoea obscura Ethiopia, love the diversity in flower form the 3 I. obscura types.

Thumbnail by

Whoops, I almost forgot the sacred sepal shot of Bone Yellow! I don't recall the sepals of Ethiopia being like this one. I will have to check again when the Ethiopia flowers up soon.

Joseph, they're all beautiful but the yellows are wonderful.

Quick questions, I received a bunch of mixed MG seeds and there are lots of seeds that are very light tan color rather than the black seeds that I usually see. Will these seeds produce light color flowers? Are there certain species with light color seeds?

Thanks, Jackie, I like the yellow flowers as well, the Bone Yellow is a delicate shade, very nice.

Lili, Blue Silk is one that tends to make tan colored seeds.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Lili - The tan are just a different color of seeds depending on the cultivar of the vine. I doubt it has anything to do with the color of the blooms. In fact, I know it doesn't because the last two that I grew from tan seeds had dark blue blooms. Really pretty, too!

Both of these had tan seeds:

I am growing some seeds from Arlan. One is the "Dai" and the other is something labeled "Q0426". Both have those weird curled leaves! Much like what you are growing Joseph! Pretty interesting. They just started producing true leaves, so it's going to be a few more weeks before I start seeing any flower buds on them.

Joseph - I love all your yellow blooms! What an awesome collection of yellows! I have tried several times to grow some of them and had no luck whatsoever. Do these vines like cooler temps? I'm trying to figure out why they won't germinate and grow for me ...

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Thanks Becky and Gerris.

I have some yellow MG seeds that I bought. They germinated and growing but no flower yet.

Well, if anyone gets seeds this year, I'd love to trade for some of the yellow blooming vines.

Here is my "Dai" plant! Love those leaves. I can't find the photo of the bloom. Anyone know the link for it?

And here is the "Q0436" vine starting to produce the true leaves. Can't fine Arlan's bloom photo for this one either. :-(

Joseph, beautiful flowers as always :-) Your vines look so healthy. How do you keep them looking so good? I found that the plants with variegated leaves tend to look a whole lot less healthy than the plain green ones. The foliage weren't that lush. Any tips?

Elsa

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Arlan - I was reading your information about Q0426. So the leaves on this plant have heart shaped leaves, so that means the feathered gene will not be present? But possibly the double petal bloom gene? What an interesting history on this vine! I am really looking forward to seeing what kind of blooms this vine produces! Thanks for the seeds!

luvs - This is

Yes,Crimson Rambler

Darren - This pale flower with the pink throat

looks to be what Emma is calling 'jamie lynn' and is a dilution of the flaked strain

Joseph - What is the diameter of the Bone Yellow (?) and is the length of the flower the same as the other Ipomoea obscura or longer (?)
Can we see a view looking into the tube (?)...
It should be entered into the PlantFiles with some indication of the comparitive differences...
If you have the Keniaki and / or the Ethiopia also growing at this time can you setup a photo with both corollas next to each other (?)...

LiliMerci - My experience is that as a general rule dark seeds tend to produce vines with darker flowers and more pigmentation on the vine stems, but not always...certain exceptions to a general rule do not necessarily discount a general rule...

Becky is right in that there are certainly noteworthy exceptions to a general rule...

TTY,...

Thanks Ron...
Becky I have a few photos of the Dai flower from Arlan's seeds...

Another for you...

Ronnie - Oh my GOSH!!! Thank you so much for the photos! I thought they were white, but forgot about the possibility of the purple stripes and block colors! This looks like it is going to be a smaller vine. Not huge leaves or blooms either. Is it an I. nil? How cool is that???!!! I love it!!! And the best part ... it took the seeds a while to germinate, so I kept adding a seed until they started popping up. So there are 3 of them growing instead of the usual one! :-)

I have a question about Moonflower (I. alba) ...

Here is a photo of my new Moonflower vine. Can the leaves be something other than heart shaped? I am pretty positive that this vine is a Moonflower vine because of the large tan seeds. (There is another vine sprouting in there too, which is Lady Yaguruma's Kaleidoscope. But it is the smaller start that doesn't even have true leaves yet.) Can someone tell me about the leaves of I. alba?

Along the back of my fence we still have water standing from Fay. Yes ... it's a bog area currently. LOL! Unbelievably, some of the MG vines I started months ago are still producing blooms, even though the vines are almost completely bare and still have some rust issues. I can't even get back there because of the saturated ground. But I was able to take some photos of the 3 vines still producing blooms.

Here is ... "Chiaki"?

This is a Pink Porcelain bloom. Love the color and the evident striping of white. Or is it white with pink striping? LOL! I keep trying to get seeds for this one to no avail. Grrrr ... I guess I need to grow this in the bed around my picket fence so I can get to it easily. I want seeds!!!!

And is this one the pink form of Star of India? The vines are about done. Looks awful along that fence panel. I collected seeds from all the vines clumped together back there, but no telling which seeds are which.

Becky, I just love your Pink Porcelain and Star of India. Especially the Pink Porcelain....
