Mockingbird.
Daily Pics - Volume 135
Great images everyone. .
Male Red Wattlebird. This guy was coming and going from a bee hive in the limestone cliffs along the river's edge. It would dive into the cavity which was out of my sight and come out a few seconds later with a bee in its beak. It did this several times whilst I was watching and I've seen him there before. These large honeyeaters are insectivorous nectar feeders, but I've never seen one take bees before.
Great pics everyone!
Love the Wattlebird and Honeyeater Margaret!
Resin Is that an "upland" bird?
The honey eater and wattle bird are great. I love Bee eaters (used to see them all the time in the NC Zoo's African pavilion aviary, when I volunteered there)
I sure miss the Bluebirds that came to my feeding station every day & lived very near. Can't imagine where they've gone since they are year rounders here in NC. Perhaps some of my gardening and other birds coming around the back area now have frightened them away.(????) I still go out nearly every morning & evening calling with meal worms, but they do not come anymore. ;-(
Resin Is that an "upland" bird?
Arctic-alpine on the breeding grounds (mountains of Scotland, Scandinavia, arctic Russia); this one was on migration though, at sea level. They winter in north Africa.
I figured it was some sort of rodent. I don't think I knew they ate mammals.
Yep, and birds, too, if they get the chance. Looks like a shrew it has there.

PS will be out of internet access the next 7 days from tomorrow so no more posts from me for a bit.
There have been some rare bird alerts recently in the Pacific Northwest, and it's causing quite a stir. Thought you might get a chuckle out of the following.
Subject: [obol] The Birder Richter Scale
The arrival of a South American flycatcher in WA state got me thinking about the degree of rarity of unusual species and how one might explain to a non-birding spouse, significant-other, your employer, etc. why you need to disappear for a while at a moments notice. Here it my proposed scale:
Mild Temblor- felt county wide with minimal interruptions to family life, work, etc., e.g. a Northern Parula in Coos County.
Small Quake- felt throughout a major region in the state causing many more interruptions, e.g. Broad-tailed Hummer in Lebanon.
Moderate Quake- felt throughout the entire state, making work place interruptions more common, disrupting family gatherings, etc., e.g. Ruby-throated Hummingbird & Little Blue Heron in Oregon.
Large Quake- felt throughout an entire region, causing wide-spread chaos throughout the region, e.g. an easily seen Whiskered Auklet or Long-billed Murrelet off the coast of either WA or OR.
Great Quake- felt throughout the entire country, causing worker productivity to drop across the nation, resulting in many doctor's appointments to be cancelled or re-scheduled, immediate abandonment of family gatherings, unplanned airflights across country, etc., e.g. Variegated Flycatcher in WA.
So Mike and MerryLynn have single-handedly caused widespread sick leave, many cancelled doctor's appointments, loads of missed meetings, and general mayhem. Nice job!
Merry migration all,
Tim R
stuck in Coos Bay

Aw resin, that's a cutie. We'll miss you!
Nice pics burn!
That's a cute series burn!
Beautiful shots everyone!
Linth, what a great start! I love that second shot of the imm. little blue heron because you can see how their legs bend the wrong way. That always amazes me.
Tigerlily, cool shot of the heron eating the rodent!
GP, I hardly ever see house finches either, so I think that's great!
Resin, love that photo and boy are you going to be missed. I'm sure I'll be misidentifying birds all week! -- like this one which I think is a Great Crested Flycatcher.
Very nice pics Elphaba!
Thanks all, last post before I disappear for a week!
Yep, that's a Great Crested Flycatcher
Resin
Love those quail adel !
Woo hoo! Resin's away! We can call our birds anything we like without fear of reprisal. This could be called "Bald Eagle with baby", but in fact it's a Eurasian Coot and chick on the nest. (I posted this or similar a few days back but have trimmed it to show more detail).
adelbercat, cute quail.
Elphaba, the crested flycatcher is beautiful.
Burn, I always enjoy your stream shots. The lily pad pics of the bathing Song Sparrow is just so sweet.
LOL....Margaret you are Baaad, acting up when the teacher leaves the room!!! I really like that pic! Dark and overcast here due to rain overnight.
ROTFLOL Margaret! Thats a precious shot!
I see we have an aussie trouble-maker!
Cute fuzzball!
