Brooklyn container Garden

GordonHawk:

You have such a beautiful garden. What a peaceful retreat! Thank you so much for sharing.

I was in Vancouver in the beginning of September. That is one of my favorite cities! A nice temperate climate and such beautiful landscape and parks intermingled with a cosmopolitan city! So people friendly! Love it!

Gordon, just stumbled upon your thread during my occasional midnight wandering...what a paradise you've created. I especially enjoy your photos with the skyline in the background - shows your amazing dedication & love for greenery overcoming less than optimum circumstances, LOL.

(Oh, and smiled at your comments about Kit. We're owned by two bengal cats and given a choice between "outside?" and food they choose their screened-in "jungle" every time, LOL)

Thank you for sharing...can I beg a photo with Kit, too??

Denise...well thanks for the garden complements...... yes it is three parts love...and the rest hard work and available cash.. since there are very few optimum circumstances ...all of the time.. I just try and make it work here...anyway..
Yes.. the Bengals are a notch above cats... they span the gammet from wild to just another person..mine thinks we are the same breed... and we're hunting companions.. And talk.. she'sworse then any sciameese cat I've had or seen... she'll keep it up as long as you reply to her here is Kits.. Millwoods Jungle Island Traveler...millwoods...after her mommy.. Jean Mills..
here's kits... at 14 years old... still trim as a kitten..as she's outside doing somethng all the time..

ROFL. Oh, I recognize the CONSTANTLY "talking" picture along with those gorgeous green eyes. Kits: meet some relatives. Millwood Millie (the redhead) along with her great grandson, F3 marbled Rocko.

Don't mean to hijack your thread, Gordon, but having owned a gazillion "regular" cats over the years, bengal cats DO bring it to another level!

Gordon..sailing can be very addictive..been there and done that...there is also a very large community of people that live on houseboats here..very calm and serene environment..I would love to do that someday..you should really try to plan a trip here sometime...but you may never leave..lol....

also need some advice on dismantling my brugs...dont have enough space this year for large pots and would like to keep a few cuttings for next year..any suggestions??..thanks so much

Gorden, Yummy, yummy garden. It feeds the soul just to look at it. I also enjoyed and will employ the foam containers that you displayed on another thread. Nice winter project to keep me from becoming stir crazy.
I am curious about your roses; do they over winter on the roof and if so, are they in the foam containers? I am wondering if one could make a container big enough and deep enough for a David Austin to over winter. I am in zone 6b. Thanks D in TN

ALOHA D..
Well... thanks for your lovely complements. yes.. the foam planters are a good project.. you csn get as elaborate as there is time for them.. you're in an elevated area there.. one of my favorite parts of the east there.. I've made the trip down US 11 then 81.. every year or two.. all my life to visit relatves in the south from the north east..
Yes.. the roses overwnter rght where they grow.. they are in mostly 2 x 12 troughs not very deep 11" or wide.11".. but long.. 22' ...my New Dawn rose is in a larger one also made of treated 2 x 12's . maybe 48" X 36" X 16 " deep. they have been there for a decade or two.. so they predate my foam planters.. the bigger they are.. the easier time they will have of it... for sure.. best of luck with them...
OH.. one of the roses is indeed in a foam planter .. Alpine Sunset it's the one at about 6 o'clock in the picture here...
you're cool there... you ought to give the brugmansias a try... the angel trumpets..about 2 o'clock in this photo also.. they like to grow a bit cool... but need to be insde for the winter... there... Gordon

Gorden, Another beautiful photo of such a healthy rose garden. Does it help to keep them disease free being on a roof top?
You mention Angel Trumpet. A lady in our little town of Gray gave me a bit and they did beautifully during the summer BUT I made the mistake of trying to do as she did; mulching them heavily and allowing them to over winter in her garden. Well mine didn't survive and I didn't have the heart to tell her I wanted another "puppy" since I'd killed the last one. D

MMMMM Devota... zone 6 mght beabit too cold to overwinter in the ground.. you'd have to have a big strong plant.. thatgrew wonderfully ..perhaps for a few years before asking it to do that.. atwo year old plant... overwintered inside one season.. then grown outside... cut back.. and heavily mulched... might make it in zone 6.. fromhay Ihear it might be too much.. You can take a cutting in thefall.. root it out and get it started insideduring the winter.. and then put out somethng that in your higher ..cooler area.. could perhaps bloom through most all of your summer.. I've sent out perhaps 3-4 hundred cuttings this fall.. so it's pretty tri here now.. but write to me come late spring andwe'll see if there'ssome Ican send to you for postage..perhaps even a nice noid or double plant then..
I get asked if the rooftop is desease or insect free... Well... I shop at piles of nurseries throughout the year.. and get every one of their deseases..insects at no addational charge.. not to mention the ones that come as riders on trades and gifts.. many pests are air borne.. and are blown about here as well .. I get few deer however..but squirrels and raccoons have no problem scampering up the fire escape 5 floors to my city garden.. at first I thought ..nice to be free of slugs ..growing on a roof membrane that gets to be 145* F on a regular basis.. but not so at all.. they do thrive in the dropped debris under the planters and in the moist dark places under a bit of wood support... or a piece of outdoor carpet... courtesy of my high end nurseries also .. it is a toxic area here though..as I have little problem spraying .. and do haveadaily spray of aconcoction called the recipe... a mix of household items which includes tea tree oil... which is agreat anti fungal item... [ which is why you see it in alot of lotions and creams for personal use.. ] it has cut way down on the powery mildew and the black sopt.. on my roses.. I also use messenger spray..and an occasional chemcal fungaside.. this year I was almost totally free of these rose prone probems..

Good morning Gorden,
Interesting post, chock full of goodies. Thanks. Well I did a bit of research and I think my unfortunate Angel Trumpet may have been a hardy form of Datura. Are they basically the same plant? Thank you for the future hope of redemption in the form of a brug.
I must disabuse you of the notion that I live in a cool climate. Since the uh..global warming/climate change, [depending on ones viewpoint,] we have real scorchers here July through part of September. Not only is it beastly, at the same time we have 2 to 4 months of drought.
We have odd winters, maybe a few days in the teens, then 30s and 40s. Most snow blows right over us. We get warm winds up from the gulf in mid winter that elevates the temps to 60 and above long enough to cause things to bud prematurely.
On top of that I live on a brick. Hard packed, red devil clay. Waaaa. Devota
