MMMMM Devota... zone 6 mght beabit too cold to overwinter in the ground.. you'd have to have a big strong plant.. thatgrew wonderfully ..perhaps for a few years before asking it to do that.. atwo year old plant... overwintered inside one season.. then grown outside... cut back.. and heavily mulched... might make it in zone 6.. fromhay Ihear it might be too much.. You can take a cutting in thefall.. root it out and get it started insideduring the winter.. and then put out somethng that in your higher ..cooler area.. could perhaps bloom through most all of your summer.. I've sent out perhaps 3-4 hundred cuttings this fall.. so it's pretty tri here now.. but write to me come late spring andwe'll see if there'ssome Ican send to you for postage..perhaps even a nice noid or double plant then..
I get asked if the rooftop is desease or insect free... Well... I shop at piles of nurseries throughout the year.. and get every one of their deseases..insects at no addational charge.. not to mention the ones that come as riders on trades and gifts.. many pests are air borne.. and are blown about here as well .. I get few deer however..but squirrels and raccoons have no problem scampering up the fire escape 5 floors to my city garden.. at first I thought ..nice to be free of slugs ..growing on a roof membrane that gets to be 145* F on a regular basis.. but not so at all.. they do thrive in the dropped debris under the planters and in the moist dark places under a bit of wood support... or a piece of outdoor carpet... courtesy of my high end nurseries also .. it is a toxic area here though..as I have little problem spraying .. and do haveadaily spray of aconcoction called the recipe... a mix of household items which includes tea tree oil... which is agreat anti fungal item... [ which is why you see it in alot of lotions and creams for personal use.. ] it has cut way down on the powery mildew and the black sopt.. on my roses.. I also use messenger spray..and an occasional chemcal fungaside.. this year I was almost totally free of these rose prone probems..
