I'm looking for privacy ideas. I would like to have a front garden that would give curb appeal, but strangers can see right in to my livingroom. I would like a planting or tree to obscure that front window while not blocking my view out. Must be able to survive blasting afternoon sun and drought tolerant. THanks!
Privacy ideas
The picture shows that you already have large trees in close vicinity of your home and one has just had some of the branches pruned off, this tree will be growing new limbs and foliage this season so not too sure if it would be wise to plant more trees so close together, take into account that tree roots need a fair area of ground and between the kerb and your home is not all that big for more trees without causing you more problems in another couple of years, this would also close of a lot of light into your home / rooms.
do you think maybe a good sturdy window box attached under the window could help, when you plant it up the plants you select could grow to a foot or two depending on your choice, these plants would have to be drought tolerant as you said this area gets full blast from really hot sun so you could try say Rosemary, Lavenders etc which would give you perfume, but like a drier soil, that dont mean no water at all though. I would think the area and a box window planter would rule out most summer bedding type plants as they would just frazzle in the heat. sorry cant think of anything else other that maybe Roman blinds or the likes on the inside window, sorry, wishing you luck. I'm not sure what zone you're in but can you grow evergreen vines? If so, you could grow one on a low trellis perhaps halfway up your window. That would give you year-round privacy without giving up all the light coming in your window.
If you can't find any plant solution to the privacy problem how about treating your window instead.
Something like shown here http://onewayglasstinting.com. There are a lot of decals, look like frosted glass, they are usually much smaller than your large window but maybe there are sheets of the material available.
whatkind of tree is that and what happened to it? Also, Ilive in Nashville and I understand what you mean. I have a small porch and I want to sit out there but not have everyone looking at what were doing. I planted years ago a yoshino cherry tree. In the summer months when I have leaves no one can see us but I can still see through the tree and the same thing in the winter. Even though I don't have leaves the branches give us privacy.
