September Blooms, Part 1

(Zone 1)

Looking at the picture reminded me that someone commented on my Angel's a few days ago and I forgot to say Thank You! I do love Angel's and have a few around the house, on plant stands and also out on the deck and in the yard!

I can't stay to chat but everyone should have their boxes by now or tomorrow. They were all mailed on Monday except to 3 people who do not post on the av forum and Jan........and she knows

Here is where I saw every one's beauties! I am laughing to tell you how far behind I am in potting ...........this is a LEAF POT of Strep Waterfall........maybe I can catch up before long and give these poor leaf pots a permanent pot.

I just love to grow from leaf as I never know what I am going to get or see. Here is a bad picture of Spring Reflections but the colors and shape of the blooms are good.

So pretty Gail. Great pictures in this thread.

Here is my Forest Orchid. This plant is so soft and velvetty. I love that about most violets.

I need to go back and catch up on this thread. I've been gone most of the week and only had a chance to pop in and out between errands and thunderstorms.

But my Guidelines was putting on a show today and I just had to take a picture.

Hi All,
Such pretty pictures.... I love the Guidline strep.. Never seen it before and it is one I now want...LOL I got packages this week and hope to later post some picture... I bought 5 epicias from Gail and I got them and then Jan sent me Sinn's and then Nicole sent me some Av's and then Nancy sent me Streps... I am going to have to start keeping a track of who sends me what as lastnight I thank Nic for Jan's plants...LOLOL I have been running running running... So after I plant a few and clean my kitchen up some I hope to take pictures of all my goodies....
Hugs,
Susan

I keep telling you, Susan..........if you want to have pretty epsicias........you must take cuttings from the plants you get and start all over..........by sticking them and giving them a saran top for a while.................

Danville, VA(Zone 7a)

Ok then what do you do with the original plant?
Sue

Williston, ND

you can use it to make more stolons or pitch the plant,or prune it way back
should encourge more growth

I just had to show everyone my good fortune. I had 2 african violet meetings earlier this week. One about 80 miles away and another about 95. I usually don't go to them both every month I usually pick one or the other, but I had to drive my DH to the airport so stayed around for the meeting. Anyway, after the meeting the president of our club invited me to her house for lunch. We've known each other for years and she knows I lost almost my entire collection when I had back to back surgeries last year. She pulled plant after plant off of her shelves and gave them to me. It was so touching I was crying. Full grown gorgeous blooming trailers. I feel so blessed to have such a person in my life. We only see each other a few times a year and for her to do this for me is unbelievable.
I've got to share these pictures with you.

Arrrgh! I hate it when I lose my post! I typed in a long response and then went to look at something else, came back and it was gone! %$#&%!

Susan: I can't wait to see pictures of all your new babies! I sure wish I could grow streps ... some day I'm going to figure it out but just don't have the patience right now! LOL.

I love Episcia's! They seem to do very well for me! I don't cut the stolons off as Gail has suggested though, I like to see them trailing over the sides of the containers.

I found a few Episcia's at Wal-Mart (of all places!) a few weeks ago, no names on them, all the tags said was shade plants. I've checked back in hopes they would get more in but the lady said they never know what they are going to get. Just like a couple of months ago they had a few Oglevee Strep's at one Wal-Mart, they went fast and never got any more in. The other Wal-Mart has not had Strep's or Episcia's. Here are tow of the noid Episcia's I got for $3.97 each.

Wow ... You really are an AV Girl! Look at all those beauties! I love Fairy Fountains (looks like a fountain of blooms!) and Champagne Pink ... just love that variegated foliage and those cute little blooms! What a neat looking flower on that one called Bol's Evening irj ... I like the look of the wasp type blooms. What is bustle back foliage? Can you show a picture of the foliage on that one? Sure is pretty ... is that considered a fantasy bloom? Can you tell I don't know much about AV's?! I remember last year someone posting about fantasy blooms and I think I remember they looked like splashes of color.

Oh how I wish I had the patience to be a good gessie parent like some of y'all.

Ellerbe, NC(Zone 8a)

Lin, what a stroke of luck......epicias and streps at Wal-Mart. I have never seen any Gessies at our local Wal-mart. Maybe it's a Florida thing? LOL Great looking epicias.......I especially like that last one with the veining and red flowers. Gorgeous.

I used to grow my epicias in small 6 inch hanging baskets also. They look really good when all the stolons start hanging down. We have really high humidity here so it worked. In a dryer climate it might not.

Yes, Fantasy is splashes of color.....then they have fantasy with what they call puffs of color. Some fantasy is streaky looking. I'll try to get a picture of that later today. I have a Russian with puff fantasy that's in bloom now.

I didn't grow any of the plants I just posted. I can't take any credit......they were all given to me.......lucky me.

I'll try to get a picture of bustle back foliage to show you......it's really unusual.

(Zone 1)

Oh, will look forward to seeing what "puff" fantasy looks like, I've never heard that term. Well ... whoever grew those plants, they are yours now and they are beautiful!

Williston, ND

jean pierre croteu is a good example of puff fantasy

Wow you all have such beauties... I like the episcias to hang also Lin, and this way I can cut stolens off and send to people... Down the road Lin I will send you some episcias as I did not know you liked them... My favorite so far is Star of Bethlehem it is so pretty... I just cleaned up my flower space and now have to put the plants I bought from Gail in there glass jars... I gave them a bath a little while ago as they were full of dirt from the long ride in the post office...LOL So soon I am hoping for some beauties.. I also have down several Kohleria worms as I call them... Hoping I can grow this way as I never have before... can't wait...
Ok break is over so I have to get back to work planting...LOL
Hugs,
Susan

Wow, I'm glad you posted the link to that AV at Rob's ... what a beauty! I checked out the picture at the AVSA website: http://www.avsa.org/Photographs/Jean-PierreCroteauLrg.jpg#http://../Photographs/Jean-PierreCroteauLrg.jpg%23 but it's no where as nice as the one Rob's shows. Rob's photo shows the colors better!

Ok SuzyQ ... now I'm off googling to see what Episcia Star of Bethlehem looks like! LOL.

Mid, ID(Zone 3b)

So much I want to comment on, I'll get to it ... I will say that the Star of Bethlehem episcia bloom is the prettiest I've ever seen, I love it!! Mine is in a slump right now but I'm hoping it recovers!!

I started a new September bloom thread as this one was getting long ...... here is the link
