Care and cutting back Confederate Rose Trees

Mobile, AL

Hello -
I recently moved into an apartment and I have a tiny patch of dirt (about 4"x4") by my porch. Someone left a confederate rose tree that I originally thought was in a pot sitting in this little space. When I started to move it, I realized that its roots had grown through the pot and into the dirt! I cut the pot out from around it, and put some more potting soil around it. It's doing ok, but has some dying leaves and looks like some kind of bug has been eating the good leaves.
So, how do I deal with these issues, and also, how do I cut it back (if I even need to). Also, should I leave it here, not knowing how deep it is (or how deep it will go)? It's right up next to the building.
Thanks for your help - Blessings - Lee Ann

I think you have done the right thing by cutting away the pot that the poor tree was struggling to grow in, the best thing to do for this tree now is to dug a large hole (larger than the pot size) add some good compost to the hole and make the hole as deep or deeper than the pot, make this hole away from the wall unless it is a climbing plant, then sit the plant in the hole and dont plant it deeper than making the top of the soil the plant was growing in any deeper. You may have to add some more compost to the bottom of the hole to get the level right or remove some, but at any rate, you need to sink the roots deeper into the soil than what you have the plant right now, the roots being above ground will be causing the leaves to drop as the roots are drying out. you can add a rose feed as directed on the box to the new soil. give it a good drink when you finger test the soil to find if the soil is dry. good luck.
