A week ago I planted a Mexican Bush Sage (Salvia leucantha). at first it was doing wonderfully. now its leaves are all looking very droopy. any clues as to what might be going on? is it possible it is getting too much water? the area in which it is planted can get a little wet sometimes. thanks for any help. My Mexican Bush Sage is not doing well
They need really good drainage and prefer to be on the dry side. This time of year if your weather's still hot it could also be transplant shock, but I can guarantee an area that stays a bit on the wet side is not going to be a good place for it in the long run so even if it's transplant shock and not the moisture that's causing problems for you now, it will cause problems in the future. I think it's going to be borderline on hardiness in your area anyway (Plant Files lists 8a, although I think there may be some cultivars that can make it in zone 7) and having wet feet in winter tends to kill things like this even in zones where they should be more reliably hardy.
thanks ecrane3. I think I am going to move it somewhere drier. probably risky but sounds like it is going to be risky to leave it where it is also.
good news. moved it to a drier location and it now doing very well. thanks again, ecrane3.
Glad to hear that! They're such beautiful plants, one of my favorites.
