I have two planted. One is doing wonderful. the other one is turning brown and looks like it is dying. I broke off some of the stems to see if they were still green and they are. Could it be a underground critter of some kind? I don't know what to do about it. It seems a little two early for it to be dying back for fall and winter.

The gophers aren't usually nearly as active now as they would have been in the spring and early summer, so while it's possible it was something like that, I suspect a watering issue or insect damage are more likely. To check whether it was an underground critter--have you seen any signs of activity in the area? If not then it's very unlikely, but if you've seen some mounds pop up recently then give your vine a little tug--if something's munched the roots it'll probably pull up really easily.
To check for watering problems I'd try sticking your finger down in the ground a couple of inches near the vine and see how it feels--if it's bone dry then you probably haven't been giving it enough water, or if it's sopping wet then you're watering too often. If the vines are planted right near each other and you do have a watering problem going on, you'll need to fix it ASAP before the other vine starts to have problems too. Or if the vines were planted this summer or late spring and didn't have a chance to get established before hot weather hit, then it can be tricky to get them through the summer and sometimes they won't make it even if you do almost everything right. Or have you seen any signs of insects? Holes in the leaves, debris on the leaves, etc? If some insect has been sucking the juice out of the plant for a while that can cause the leaves to turn brown too.
If you don't think it's any of the above, or if you think it might be but you're not sure which one, it might help if you could post some pictures and give us some more info on the conditions the plant is growing in (sun/shade, sandy/clay soil, fertilizer, watering frequency, etc) and the progression of the symptoms--did you notice yellowing? wilting? something else? prior to the leaves turning brown, how quickly did this all happen, etc.
