My Lipstick Salvia, Salvia Greggii, Lythreum, Black-eyed Susan vine, Passion Vine, Cardinal vine have maybe put on one or two blooms. These should all have been blooming all summer. They all get full sun, I've given Miracle grow once at begining of the growing season. They are mulched very well with well composted horse manure/sawdust. Can I feed them
somthing now so that I could get some blooms before Fall comes on?
Second year and these plants hardly flower for me!
Some perennials follow the rule "first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap" so if they look healthy otherwise it's possible they're just creeping this year and next year you'll get the blooms you were hoping for. Salvias for sure don't need a lot of fertilizer, I have a ton of them and never fertilize them and they bloom fine so I doubt if that's the problem with them. S. greggii does have the common name "Autumn Sage" so it's possible it'll put on a better show for you as we get into fall also. Mine bloom most of the year but I'm not sure how your hotter summers and potentially colder winters (depending on where you are in TX) might change their blooming patterns. I'd also look at watering, again I speak mostly for the salvias but if you are a bit heavy on the water they may grow fine but not bloom as well, they tend to like things on the dry side.
try bloom booster. i have had vines this year that flowered in the past and nothing at all this year. my passi my dutchmens pipe and a few others even some of my morning glories arent. gonna try bloom boost myself.
my black eyed susan vine looks like its barely growed this season. i think its the weather.
I have had some similar gardening problems here in UK, now I have one or two Rhododendrons in full flower for the second time this year even though I dead head them, the new buds that formed for next spring are flowering and the shrub is still making buds, way, way out of character as I have grown these for about 20 years and never had any problems, my veg patch is a disaster as we had a really hot spring, April-May and just as I was filling my tubs and baskets, the weather has turned really cool, wet and windy, so lots of my veg went to seeds before it was even mature enough to gather, carrots and parsnips have turned soggy and even the tomatoes I have to grow indoors wont turn red now as it is too late here for that, so all in all, it has been a disaster for a lot of my plants and most of my friends who are into gardening have been calling to report strange things happening with there garden, I really do think it is climate changes, well for the past 2 years here anyway, I have family in Canada and they report slow or flowerless plants and fruit not pollinating the same as before, maybe we will need to rethink what we grow in about 10 years from now. good luck anyway. WeeNel.
Thanks WeeNel-reminds me of our Fall crop of tomatoes in my horticulture class last year. We had a cold freeze and we picked all our green tomatoes
off brought them inside and set them in a dark corner, single layer and covered with a sheet of newspaper. They had to be blemish free. In time they gradually
ripened to a deep red. They were small tomatoes including cherry so we were able to stack them.
I don't know what you can do about the lack of flowers on your vines, but if you cut your salvias back by about a third and do nothing, or give a small amount of a bloom booster, you should get a pretty good showing of flowers for fall. Same as ecrane, I don't fertilize mine, but a diluted amount may help. Miracle Grow is fine for foliage plants, but those grown for their flowers will need a fertilizer with less nitrogen, I think. Are all of those plants perennials for you? If not, I know you can collect seeds from the salvias at the end of the growing season and plant them next year. I just love Salvia Greggii (called Cherry Salvia here). I think it is one of the most beautiful, but underused plants around - at least in St. Louis.
