Okay - this has been growing and growing and now about 5 feet tall. I swear I almost pulled it last year, but then it finally bloomed...I THINK! It's ugly right now...I'm almost ready to pull it. ANYONE?

If it doesn't bother you keep it as it looks like your garden has a natural, relaxed look.... If it does bother you get rid of it.... With my many years of gardening I have realized that I'm the one to decide if something is a weed and if something needs to go then it should go... happy gardening..

That is such a nice way of looking at it! Thank you!

I'm a real amateur but the leaves kinda remind me of butterfly weed. what were the blooms like? ( I just like to look at the id requests to try to figure them out lol)

I'm not familiar with what grows in your neck of the woods, but it looks like a sage plant from southern California. Sage and Salvia here send out a lot of volunteers, but not to great distances. I love volunteer plants and keep some of the native chaparral and trees that "blow in" by watering and trimming and even transplanting into more desirable locations. Even better, the gophers don't eat them!!

This does look familiar but I can't think of it right now. It is a weed however..I am thinking more along the dandelion type family...wait & see what the flowers do..if they "shed" to a puffy white then it's a dandelion family weed. I hope this helps..if you can, take this pic to the local nursery & maybe they can help.
Sorry.

This is growing in my yard and I learned from a neighbor that it is"Sweet Annie"  After it blooms in mid-September you dry the plant and cut it into bunches and hang it all over your house and it will smell sooo nice.  I thought maybe that's what is growing in your garden.

Farmgirl, pass your hand over your plant. If you get a whiff of cinnamon, it's Sweet Annie! Sandra has a great pic of it in her lovely garden. I've been a big fan of Annie's, until this year ... it literally took over my "secret garden" in a flash! They are sprouting quicker than I can pull them. I left few bushes, because I truly love the fragrance.

Oh! SugarSnap, it must be so nice to be able to grow coleus and other plants that take cooler weather and shade! Not here in HOT Inland Southern California for sure!
