I read the story on the homepage about how weeds tell the soil condition so I was wandering what does wire grass bermuada grass or devil grass tell about my soil also how does black plastic make vegetable grow better if its put around them
I read the story on the homepage about how weeds
I cant say anything about the grasses other than we get this growing where the soil is not too fertile or where there has been old buildings removed, so maybe it is a sign of the poor soil as the old buildings normally leave some lime etc from all the mortar cement etc. The black plastic helps to keep moisture in and MOST weeds out, it also helps to warm the soil up faster come early spring if laid on top of the beds before/after a frost or before the soil has had a chance to warm up naturally by the hot sunshine, for veg though, you would need to cut crosses/ holes in the plastic for the baby plants to be set into the soil and then grow tall through the holes, you must also water the soil when required, but this should not be as often as you would without the black plastic, you also need to make sure you have your soil well prepared in advance and ad any manure/compost dug in before you lay your black plastic as you cant lift it the same once the plants start to grow, any weed seeds trying to grow under the black plastic cant grow at all as they are starved of any light, clear plastic lets light in so weeds would still grow, Here in UK, I sometimes make tents or as we call them Polly cloches from the clear plastic to protect the baby plants from the cold winds and heavy frosts, but the weeds grow fast and furious with this little greenhouse effect, Hope this helps a bit, good luck. WeeNel.
thankyou
