i just moved to a studio in chicago and i was wondering if i could grow any veggie or herb plants on the windowsill. there is no airconditioning and plenty of very slightly shaded light. i think tomatoes would grow, but i don't know what else. the other thing is my cat. as beuatiful as he is, he decimated my minuture rose bush in my last appt. i think perhaps he's mellowed out since then. so nothing poisonous, though veggies would be fine. right? pretty much any plant (veggie or not) i could keep alive would give me pride.
please help

windowsill plants
Hi,
I doubt tomatoes would grow inside with just window light. However, some of the herbs might or even leaf lettuce.
I hope your cat has mellowed. I can't grow plants indoors because of my cats. One of them digs up the potting mix and flings it all around. So, I went to the HD and got some white rocks to put on top of the potting mix. That worked fine. Then I got another cat. She thought the rocks were great fun to dig out of the pot and bat all around the house. Stepping on those barefoot in the middle of the night -- oh, yeah. So, I'm just not going to try any more plants inside.

glendalekid,
Try small pine cones in your flower pots. I've used them around newly planted things in my flowerbed and it has worked real well to keep the cats from digging my small new plants out. They hate the prickly feel of the pine cones.
NatureLover1950,
Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe she wouldn't find the pine cones as much fun as batting the rocks all over the house. We have small pine cones here just for the picking up.
Karen
