plant swap

I dug out a huge amount of Carex 'ice dance'. I'm transplanting some, but I have plenty to share. It's a great carex that is impervious to slugs. Any takers out there?

Also I dug up a few rhizomes from Petasites 'golden palms'. Gordon, I know you wanted some of this. Are you still interested?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Hey Pixs, save one for me, for some reason the one you gave did not make it.

No problem. Is someone going to be picking up plants for you at the swap?

Snohomish, WA

Yes, pix! I do want the petasites! I will be dividing this monster up also. It was just a stick I got at the GE in Feb. It took over a huge section of the bed, nearly killed the cardoon, but I like still! Basically, I'm just going to have a shovel and point at plants and say" You want some?". I think it is late enough in the year.

What is that monster with the yellow flowers?

I like the shovel and point method. You've got the petasites.

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

I have to agree - I love the image of 'ya'wantsome?' - really makes me chuckle.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I am hoping that Gordon will bring them out when he comes to get the Kiwi.
Pix. That was "Ice Dance" I want. The other is fine.

North Lakewood, WA(Zone 8b)

I haven't been to a plant swap since one of the first GE ones. I don't know that I really need anything but I would be glad to come and peruse and donate lots of Darmera and some epi cuttings as well as a few other treasures. I should have alot of Dicentra scandens seed by then too. Anyone up for some Black-eyed Susan?

Please come. It'd be great to meet you. I'll take some Black-eyed Susan and Darmera . . . not sure yet what I'll have.

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh, and I have a ton of Delosperma cooperi (aka Ice Plant) which is a ground cover succulent that blooms with beautiful magenta flowers. Quite hardy up here, it is taking over where I want to establish my cactus and succulent garden.

Rob

I dug out today:
Geranium phaem 'samobor'
Mature Alchemilla mollis
More of the petasites 'golden palms' (Gordon, Tills)
Tiarella 'black snowflake'

Tills, I have you down for the 'ice dance' . How much do you want? I have a ton of it.

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Gordon, please let me know about the plant swap the week before it happens, I have soooo! many things going on, that I could forget. I have a lot of material to bring. I'll have it ready before Oct. I have doubled my garden areas to include a show garden, Hosta Hybrid Beds. bog garden, Fuchsia Beds, Hellebores. part shade, and now the neighbors have asked me to landscape the part in between us. so that is full sun. I have a lot of specimen trees, shrubs, and other perenials, to work into that space. I'm am Sooooooo! excited ! about all the transformation I'm doing. I've been working on the trails to have steps on the hillside in 6 different areas maybe 8. I scheduling garden tours starting in April. Hostajim1 is on the move!!!!!

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Oh, Jim this sounds extraordinary - this is going to be so exciting to watch it develop - I can hardly wait to see pictures of Pix striding womanfully forth to take it all in (I think that may be one of my favourite pictures of her).

Ps. I haven't forgotten to send on photos - I've just gotten distracted. Still on my to do list.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

3 or 4 will do, and one of everything else, LOL

LOL! 3 or 4, Tills? Three or four? I have about 50 square feet of the stuff. I'll just bring you a large clump if I can lift it and you can decide how to divide it up. I do love this plant as it makes a terrific, snail and slug proof ground cover that will take some shade. But it is planted in an area that it is enjoying simply too much. I have to move it to drier ground.

'Womanfully forth' Laurie?? I like the idea. Jim's property is perfectly positioned for beautiful gardens. It's already beautiful with what he's done so far. I can imagine what it's going to be like when he is 'finished' , so to speak (as if there is ever a 'finish' line).

Here's a sad tale: my friend who gave me cuttings from her epiphyllum about 15 years ago just lost the mother plant to some kind of red fungus. It killed both of her very old, mature epi's that were her fathers before her. She is just so sad about. Good reason to share cuttings with people. Now I can bring her part of the same mother plant, even though she will have to start over.

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Lauri, I know what you mean, by busy. I have had the crew working all summer. now there is a 4 areas with steps made out of RR Ties, ruff milled lumber. down to the bog area. I just finished clearing out the neighbors 5 species of Noxious Weeks, now I sprayed Round Up on any low weeds. so I have a clean slate to work with. I have several specimen plants. that could use more sun, this fits the bill. also James Kelsey Studios is displaying some of his metal sculpture there. yes I will display my spheres around the gardens. I have been carving Feather Rock to make mini landscapes and put them in the landscape. and the hypertuffa pots are around the place also. I'm amazed that I have kept up with my hybrid crosses this year. I have made around 900 so far. I've just started harvesting the pods off of the Hosta. I need some time off. the other day I made 3 circles like the 3 stooges. wondering what to do 1st. Jim

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

I'm in! Looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting new gardening friends! I miss everybody! Hugs, Rachel

I will post what I'm bringing in the next week or so.

Snohomish, WA

You have that one advantage over me Jim, no job thing to do! Two jobs makes it harder! But have made head way at least this year. So much more to do and get. Then there's signs and walkways, a fountain of some sort, just has to be big!!
But if all my projects come out this good it will be worth it!

My address is: 15908 SR 9 SE
Snohomish, Wa 98296

Directions are pretty simple. Coming from the south take I-5N to I-405N. Take the 522 exit towards Woodinville. Stay on it till the SR 9 exit, Snohomish. Turn left on to SR 9 and my house is 5 miles north of the exit on the left. I will have signs out and plenty of parking and tables set up for people.
I'll have doughnuts and coffe and stuff to munch on, so no one will starve!

Gordon, that turned out to be terrific!! You are so right. If everything turns out that good, you are IN!

Snohomish, WA

Has anyone seen or have the dicentra Spooky. I got to get some of that now!!

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

NIce tub, dude. Now where are the carnes?

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Rachier - how nice to see you pop up, you have been missed.

And NW, I was just going to ask for a fuller photo of the one at the top - my word that has grown on in such a short time - you are a real doer!!!!! Looks terriiffic!

Jim, can we have a couple photos of the work in progress - I always love seeing the on-goingness of these gardens. It makes it feel a lot lot closer.

Olympia, WA(Zone 7b)

Jim,
I can only imagine how fabulous your yard/garden looks. I thought it was amazing when we saw it this late spring/early summer, pictures please :0)

Snohomish, WA

This is the Daves Garden garden. It didn't turn out too bad either, considering they are all plants given to me from DGers. And if anyone knows what that tall plant with the cool leaves is please tell me!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Have no clue, don'T see mine LOL.

Snohomish, WA

You have two plants in there tilly! But they are just dwarfed at the size of some of these plants.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Gordon - I believe the plant in question is Macleaya cordata.
It is known for spreading - did you give it lots of space to occupy?

I just pulled out about a gazillion seedlings of said plant.

Dug up some Ligularia 'The rocket', and Alchemilla alpina to bring. Also some babies from Begonia grandis.

Port Orchard, WA(Zone 8a)

Gordon, I'm working on a deal to buy Terrestrial Orchids, anyone interested? Jim

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Would like to know if anyone has some woolly thyme starts? I want some for the new Dahlia bed. Or a groundcover like that. small and tiny.
Tills

Mountlake Terrace, WA(Zone 8a)

Terrestrial orchids, the plant? Or a business?

Are there orchids that we could grow in our gardens that would be nice additions?

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

I think they are house guests? Like it indoor, or am I wrong Jim?

I have some plants for the swap, If someone can pick them up at the store? Let me know....
Have some starts from my weeping willow that have taken root. also have some some others, Columbine from the seeds from I traded with last fall, color red and some red and white from Gordons seed stash he gave me a Rach's or from Heidis stash. wrote it down, have it just can't find at the moment. and some others.

Snohomish, WA

Tilly are you coming? Sounds like you are packing the car up with plants!!!
I will have a few gunneras, and there is a cutting from the petasites that I have rooted and doing great.

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Sorry Gordon can not make it, so wish. Back to work on Tues, and still no car. Using my Bros baby car, My dogs don't fit in. LOL

There are many terrestrial orchids, and we can grow some of them here in the garden. We even have some that are native.
Here's a link to a few:
http://www.wanativeorchids.com/Platanthera/index.html

then there are the East Coast natives called Lady's slipper orchids. Very beautiful, and some are very picky about where they grow. Also very pricey.

What kind of orchids are you buying, Jim?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Yes, the ladyslippers are pricy, indeed. Thanks for the native orchid site, Pix.

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

Tilly, I have woolly thyme, but I'm not sure how I would get it to you. I'm not likely to be able to go to the swap, just too much to do right now. Actually, I should be in bed as the dawn comes too soon. Maybe I could send you cuttings in the mail. I think they are not too hard to root.

All PNW folks, I do have seeds from the Echium pinninana I had at school. They are somewhat prickly and hard to get off the plant, so i just snipped off sprays with several seed clusters attached. If you want some, I can either set some aside with names for some day when I get to meet up with people another time, or I could mail them if I manage to get appropriate envelopes (although I can't promise I would get to it right away). D-mail if interested.

Snohomish, WA

Well, maybe I will pop over for a visit some time. you can put my name on a cluster.I understand about not having time. Still have lots to do out there before the swap!
