Aloe Vera trouble : (

Brookfield, CT(Zone 5b)

I've had my Aloe Vera for about a year and it has done excellently. But I've noticed recently that the leaves are becoming hollow! The gel is gone and air has taken its place! New leaves are normal, but they quickly drain as they become older. The plant shows no signs of wilt, rot or any stress. It continues to grow, but I can't figure out how to fix the problem. I've noticed this happening to some extent, mostly just in the tips of some leaves over the year, but never to this extent. I water when I notice the soil is dry, perhaps it needs better drainage?

It sounds more like lack of water.Do you check the soil? If they are in small pots, particularly unglazed clay, they can dry out fairly quickly.

Its in a ceramic pot with no drainage holes (gasp, I know). I'm very careful to make sure its dry before I water. Perhaps I'm still letting it dry out too much. Maybe it needs fertilizer? I just remembered that I have never given it anything but water. Do Aloes fare better when fed?

In the growing season, they do need a fair bit of water to keep the leaves plump and full, remember this plant and it's leaves are just full of moisture, not water but turns into gel as you said, it is good for burns and wounds too. I would remove it from the pot and replant it into one with drainage holes in the bottom so you can give it a good drink but the excess water will drain away, if you sit it in a sauser, pour away the excess water after about an hour, I feed my Aloe Vera plants every month in the growing season with a half doze of indoor liquid plant food, you need to make sure nothing is damaging the tip of the leaves also as this causes the tips to go brown/yellow till the damaged part heals, the never grow a new tip though, good luck.
