I live in Northern California. I have a Alstromeria planted in a rather large pot on my deck. I have noticed in the last month or two that the leaves are turning yellow soon after the flowers open. The flowers are abundant and healthy looking. The yellowing starts in the veins on the lower leaves and works its way up. The plant gets regular water and fish emulsion every month. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong ? Thanks, Steve
Alstromeria foliage problem
The way you deadhead alstroemerias and keep them blooming is to pull out the entire stem that the spent flowers were on, rather than just snipping off the bloom like you would with most flowers. I've noticed on mine if I'm lazy and leave them alone rather than deadheading as I just described, they'll start to do just what you're describing. I've also had some of mine that were in full sun look a little crispy toward the end of summer if we've had a lot of hot weather, but your summers are cool enough I don't think that's what's happening to yours. The other thing to check is whether it's gotten potbound--Alstroemerias have big chunky roots and if it's grown a lot this year it could easily have gotten potbound and needs a little more room. When things are potbound it becomes nearly impossible to give them as much water as they need because the pot is all full of roots and doesn't have enough soil to hold water. Or of course overwatering is always a possibility with anything, so if none of the above sound like what's going on, I'd try sticking your finger down a few inches into the soil and see how wet it feels.
