im new and i need some help on my stuff in my garden
Don't leave Cannas in the ground all winter. They will die in your zone. Dig them up, cut the foilage off and put the bulbs in a brown bag or a box and store some place that doesn't freeze (basment works.) You might want to mulch around the little clematis. At 8", it must be a very young plant.
I am not really sure what zone you are in, I leave Clematis, Cannas etc in the ground all year and I am in about zone 5 to 6, depending on the winter weather, but I throw a thick mulch around all the plants in Autumn to protect them, I have had the Cannas in the bed for years now and so far they have always come good, but if you are really worried, then lifting them and storing them is as stated before, your best bet, before you pop them into paper bags though make sure they have no diseased areas and the tubers are good and firm, you will also need to cut the foliage of them, so if you do lift them, lay them out in a coldish place, this lets all the moisture drop out and clean the soil off the roots, or they will rot while in storage, you can also store them in horticultural dry sand for winter in the basement, BUT you need to check them over from time to time no mater where you store them, IF you find any brown soft bits on the tuber, just make a clean cut with a really sharp knife to remove this damaged part or it will spread while in storage to all the other plants. Good luck. WeeNel.
The forsythias can definitely stay in the ground, they always do well even here in Canada which is colder than your area.
